Fog Lights

My 2001 ML has a fog light switch, it never did anything when activated. I had to check a headlight the other day and noticed there are no bulbs in the cavities! Assume the used dealer I bought it from must have needed the bulbs?

Can anyone give me the bulb number and or spec? Appreciate it.

Fog Lamps

I'm not sure about your model year, but for the 1999 ML430, the fog lamp bulb number is listed in your owners manual.

However, just because you install the bulbs and press the button, don't expect the lamps to work.

Your car needs to be programmed for that switch to operate the bulbs. My original understanding is that the fog lamps are too high (aim?) to meet US standards and that is why they are not factory "enabled".

I told my dealer I needed them for "off-roading" and for a small fee they enabled the feature. Some here have reported getting the programming for free.

Hope this sheds some "light" on the subject.

The red light on the switch goes on, should be intersting maybe I'll do a volt meter check.

Thanks also for the above list, the other lights were listed the fog lights were not.

the red light on the switch that goes on is for the rear fog, it is on the driver side only. when pressed up, the fog switch switches on the front fog, when pressed down, it switches on the rear. I bet yours didn't get activated by dealer to use the front fog.

I went thru the drill with my dealer, certain states allowed them others did not. I put in the bulbs, and of course they did not work, they were disabled in the body computer. T make a long story short I told them i was going to install my own lights and for $35 they activated it. There are two activations one turns them on, the other activates the green bulb in the cluster.

Bulbs for Fog Lights

When you installed the bulbs, were they the H3 with the pig tail? I started down this path, but couldn't figure how to hook the pigtail into the wiring. I was working pretty much blind (bent over using a mirror to see what was what in the light pod). Is it just a "plug and play"?

Fog Lights

At least on the '99, ML430 there is a loose wire just sitting in the lamp housing that connects to the bulb pigtail....my memory says it's brown but that was a long time ago.

The wire won't short to anything because it's not activated until it's programmed to work.

Brown wire is a ground wire on any and all German vehicles.
