Rear Tire Wear
We have a 2000 ML320 with some unusual tire wear. The inside edge of both rear tires is feathered and cupped. The wear is primarily on the tread bar farthest to the inside edge.
The car steers very well with no apparent pull, it will track straight without steering input for as long as the road stays even and straight. A mechanic has suggested it may be a suspension problem, and he did not feel able to work on a Mercedes-Benz. He also said it could be a toe-out or camber problem. I do not think it is a tire problem because the problem is only in the rear. Is anyone familiar with this type of problem? Jim W. |

The rear shocks/struts were replaced under warranty because they squeaked and groaned. They were checked at each service interval and as recently as about 5,000 miles ago. We were told they were fine. The bounce test also said they were OK.
It has been suggested that the camber is set to improve handling but it will wear the inner tire as a result. Jim W. |
