Automatic door locks don't auto lock

I am unable to enable the "automatic door lock when the vehicle starts" feature on my 2001 ML320. I'm wondering if someone disabled it due to the rear tailgate problem I read about on several threads? If they did, what might they have done? Is there a separate fuse for this circuit? The locks work fine with the remote.
