Replacement battery for 1999 ML430
The original battery on my 1999 ML430 finally gave up ghost. I am trying to find an aftermarket battery here in Manitoba, Canada. The MB dealer here wants $267 for an OEM battery. My CAA membership's battery service normally will supply and install a battery on site but unfortunately they do not have a battery size for the ML. Does anyone have any experience with Magnacharge batteries? (I believe they are made by Trojan) They have one sized for the ML but is rated at 820 CCA listed for $169.99. It comes with a 60 month prorated warranty and 2 yr free replacement. The other one I can find is from NAPA, their Legand rated at 875 CCA and listed for $213.89 with a prorated 72 month warranty and 2 yr free replacement. Incidentally, the MB OEM battery only come with a 2 yr free replacement and 3 yr prorated. So it seems I am paying a lot for not any more protection. I like to know if anyone have any experience with both the Torjan and NAPA. Thanks.

go OE. Ml batteries are odd sized and they last a lot longer than 3 yrs. My ex-girlfriend replaced her original battery in her 2000 ML320 just last year.

Try MB Roadside Assistance
I have a 1999 430. Somewhere on this forum, someone suggested MB Roadside Assistance. We are way past warranty (130K) but they came out on a Friday night and replaced the battery, 3 year warranty, plus if I have battery trouble again, they will come out and replace no questions asked.
I think it was about $175, but I looked at getting a replacement from a parts store, it was generic, more expensive and I would have had to deal with it. You can call them and they gave me a price before I agreed to have them replace. |

Been there done that, OEM is the best way to go. My 2 cents.

I did the replacement this morning. Took me 20 minutes. I decided to go with the NAPA Legend 75. Its rated at 900 cca and it fits perfectly exactly like OE. I got an additional 7% discount because of CAA membership, so the final cost was C$ 198.92. I just can't justify spending C$267 for the OE. There is only one MB dealer in this province so they really got you if you need OE parts. I remember having to replace a cracked side mirror housing. And it is just the outside housing without the mirror, motor etc. and it was $150.
MB roadside assistance is only good in Canada for the duration of warranty period, so I was way past that. My CAA membership do provide battery service and they will also replace your dead battery on the spot with no service charge. They also comes with a 3 yr free replacement with additional 3 yr pro-rated afterwards. Unfortunately they don't carry the size for the ML. So I was out of luck. |
