While lusting I mean looking at several sources a couple questions come to mind.
First: What kind of gas mileage does a 1985 280GE with automatic get?¿ I have read some posts about trying to find a good shop or dealer to work on a G-Wagen. My question is: If I have a very good non MB mechanic would that be ok or should I drive 100 miles to get to an MB mechanic?¿ Thanx.

Frank, Who does the work on your Unimog? I would say that they could also handle the Gwagen. There is very little on the 280GE that any mechanic could not work on. Besides that, in true MB fashion they are extremely hardy and need little repair.

Gas milage stinks. The truck is very heavy and shaped like the factory that produced it. The G's are also geared pretty low and run 3-4000 rpm on the highway. You can expect 12-15 mpg depending on the type of driving you do. I guess that isn't so terrible considering many modern SUVs can't do better that 20mpg.

The Mog is in restoration so it is with a custom car builder friend. Hopefully when it is done I will be able to handle the service end of things. But I like to have a good mechanic for backup.
