1999 Ml 430--Using impact wrench to remove steering wheel nut

I need to replace the combination switch (turn signal switch) on my 1999 ML430. I've read how difficult it can be to loosen the steering wheel hold down bolt.

I have access to an 18.8V impact driver as well as a heavy duty 1/2" air powered impact wrench. Any harm or warning about using either of these to remove the hold down bolt on the steering wheel?

Related question--I can't tell from the STAR Service DVD and I haven't started the repair. Does the bolt loosen with a 10mm hex drive in the center?

Thank you--Jim

Don't put power tools on it. Use a breaker bar and have someone hold the wheel while you try to loosen it.

What he said.

You don't want to be pounding against the steering lock. Unlock the column and have someone hold the wheel. I do think it's a 10mm allen.

I have used air impact successfully

on a 1988 560SL and a 1983 W123. No problems with unlocking and simply holding steering wheel with free hand. If you cannot hold wheel firmly enough, brace it from a spoke to the floor of the car usiing a piece of 2x4.

After the center bolt is removed, clean the thread locking compound from it before reinstalling. It will make it a lot easier next time. The tapererd seat under the bolt head offers a lot of contact area. A simple one-grunt tighteneing is sufficient to keep the wheel firmly in place. The thread locking compound is typical MB overdesign.

No Way to explain crash to Insuror

(Trust me,
They'll LOOK)

With the Undamaged Steering Wheel loose in the Passenger cabin.

1.Use Hand Tools ONLY
2.Yes, Clean the Loctite from the Bolt.
(Plain Ole Paint Stripper Gel works well.'Just remember to clean ALL the
Stripper OFF the bolt...Non-Chlorinated Brake Parts Cleaner)
3.Apply New Loctite to the Bolt before re-installing.
4.Use a Torque Wrench and the Proper MB FSM Torque Specs when tightening.

As Always:
YMMV
