G-Wagen engine

I have a G-Wagen 300D engine in my 240D and find it's particularly fast and economical. Does anyone know if the camshafts in these engines are different from the regular 300D in the 123 series sedans? Are there any other major differences in the engines?

Thanks,
Ben

Howdy Ridge,
This won't answer your question about the diesel engines but is about the difference in the gas engines. Go to the thread "?¿?¿ On 2 Dealers" (2nd page). Read the post by "evensteven".

I;ve got the 616 engine in my 307d motorhome in the UK and I am also curious as to whether there any substantial differences between the engine Mercedes put in their trucks and the ones in the 240d. It's obviously geared a lot differently than the car.

Ridge,

I have a 1980 GD300 Cabriolet. Not so sure if the cams are different from the car version motor, but the injectors are definitely different. Many G diesel owners have tried replacing worn injectors with injectors for a 300D car motor of the same year as their trucks, only to find that their trucks would run extremely rough. The spray volume is unique for the GD300 injectors. In turn, your motor has a different torque curve than the normal car motor. Makes sense since even a cabriolet G tips the scale at 5,000 lbs!!
If you raced a stock 300D I am pretty sure your car would get off of the line quicker and stay ahead the whole way.
Where did you find that motor anyway? Pretty rare find. Does it still have the 'megahorn' intake with blockage indicator on it?

Regards,

Steven

300GD engine

Steve,

Thanks for the info. My g-wagen engine came as a result of my constructing a 240D the way I wanted it using all MBZ components. Was going through a 4 year lawsuit (I won!) but needed something to keep me from going fruitloops. So I assembled a 240D with the 300GD engine from a stripped 240D and a wrecked 300D. The garage that sold me all the parts had the 300GD engine and it supposedly had only 150,000 miles on it, so I went for it. Didn't like the one piece pan so I put the normal 300D pan on.

The engine matched up with the 240D manual transmission moves out very nicely and gets surprisingly good mileage. In fact, I've never found anyone else who gets as good mileage. 27-28 around town and up to 32 on the highway. Mind you, I have the turbo rearend (3.07) in it as well.

I did replace the injectors with standard ones and as a result of your info am going to try and find the original ones that I problably still have. With the original ones it might climb cliffs.

Anyway, I love the combination and everyone else in the family now has a 123 MBZ. Mine, a 240D for the daughter, and two turbos for the son. We're intercooling the turbos and have put four speeds in them as well. Once the intercooler is installed, will put up pictures.

My 300GD didn't have a "megahorn" manifold, wonder what they look like? Why the megahorn? I'll have to investigate the engine some more. Is there a manual for the G-Wagens and if so where can one obtain it?

Thanks,
Ben

Ridge,

I was six when we got our first Benz. A brand new 1976 mustard yellow 240D auto that I picked out. (roughly same color as this smiley on the left)
I have very fond memories of that vehicle because I spent so much time in the backseat. I remember trying to count all of the holes in the perforated headliner on a trip to Yosemite. . .Great car. I think I will try to find one in nice condition.

The motor in my GD300 has a intake that resembles a horn. It sits pretty high in the engine bay for water crossings. The housing is metal and the air filter is a cylindrical type. It also has this clear plastic round device about halfway down the horn. If there is a blockage a red indicator will show and it can be reset as well. It's pretty neat.

The best source I know for a G motor manuals is the G guru himslef. His name is Harold Pietchmann. He is so familiar with the off road driving characteristics of the G Wagen, that the armed forces called him up to train our guys how to drive a G in extreme conditions. Yep, looks like the Hummer is going to phased out and replaced by G Wagens. Our guys already used G's in Afghanistan.

He sells the manuals on CD. I know, I would like to have the actual book too, but at least they are available.

What did you do with the oil pan?

G-Wagen

Steven,

Thanks for the info update. so we're going to start using G-Wagens in the U. S. Army. That's great, means that there may be some good surplus ones coming up one day. Hopefully, they're all diesels.

No, I don't have the old pan, changed it at the shop where I assembled all the bits. The reason that the engine was in the shop was because the original owner had the shop install a turbo diesel engine in his. Must have made quite a difference.

Thanks,
Ben
