the dealer told me the windw switches are a big problem on the ml 320s they said 40,000 are back ordered in the us and no one has them. is this all true?I have been driving around for months with no drivers window operation.

Part of it is true.
They have been a big concern. Seem to be less of a problem, we were doing several a day. Now MB says they have started using a different company to build the switches, and we can go an entire week without replacing one, so it's getting better!
No idea about the backorder concern. When MB switched vendors there was a backlog for them, but we haven't had a shortage for quite awhile, I know we have them in stock where I work.

I replaced mine couple of months ago without any delay. You may want to check with your dealer again. Maybe they are just pulling your legs.

Unhappy 98 junk widow switches

my switches fell apart at 60,000mi ,and it is a 98 . I have heard of many problems with the 98 ml that were corrected in 99,00,01,02 so hopefully yours is ok g-benz. thank god for my extended waranty! it has paid for itself with new cats new fuel pump + regulator and new rear hatch latch.oh yea the harmonic balancer also seperated one day! $1,900.00 so far on a $1,100.00 policy from the starmark program I am ahead of the game. the dealer said the harmonic balancer is a fairly common problem. good luck john.......................................

No, it is not just the 98 ML which has problems with window switches. My driver's switch failed on my wife's 99 ML a few weeks ago. It was 100 degrees outside and the window was stuck down.

A call to MB Roadside assistance, and within 30 minutes, a service truck was at my door and a replacement switch was fitted for no charge with an apology for any inconvenience.

Good deal I thought.

This is a concern right up to 2001, in 2002 the switching system changed totally. The 98 through 2001 used the same system, but the switches I beieve were gradually improved upon. 98 and 99 were both about the same when new. In 2000 and 2001, they seemed better, but still not that unusually to have a problem.
We had one tech go from Madison WI to LaCrosse, WI to replace a ML window switch after hours, about 2+ hours one way! DON'T expect this type of service every time though.
You think 100 degree heat with a stuck open window is bad? Try 10 below zero! We're about 60 miles from the Northwest Tollway in Illinois, so we have seen this before, several times. Luckily the ML heater WILL definitely throw out some serious heat in the highest temp setting.

Well, I just jinxed myself...driver's side switch has been intermiitent, and this morning, refused to put the window up!!! Repeated toggling got the window up about 1cm every other iteration until it was completely up!

Fortunately, it's going in next week for inspection, "A" service, and windshield replacement (cracked). Time to hit them up with the warranty issues, including a noisy fan...

With the window switch acting up problem, often if you pull up and at the same time push the switch left or right, it will make contact and move OK.
The noisy blower fan could very well be debris in the fan cage, seen this alot.

Good to know the problems are minor...I really haven't experienced the "horror" stories with my ML as others on this forum have...so I'm refinancing the "balloon" and keeping it for another five (or more) years...

...after all, gotta get that Kleemann one of these days!!!

Took the ML to the dealer a couple of weeks ago.

Noisy blower was actually a bad blower motor, so it was replaced.

They also replaced all of the window switches on the console.

ML is perfect once again, and ironically, the least problematic of my fleet!
