Transmission fluid replacement

I apologize in advance for introducing a topic which has probably been debated to death in the past. However, the time has come where I need to make a decision and would like some help. Our 1998 ML320 has just over 80,600 miles on the odometer. The transmission shifts correctly, hot or cold, and does not currently exhibit any problems. There is a shuddering when turning corners at low speed but I think this may be due to the transfer case issue with the early MLs rather than a transmission problem.

So, the question. Should I have the local dealer replace the transmission fluid and filter and incorporate the upgrades that have been outlined in the technical service bulletins? Should I just leave the exisiting fluid? I plan to keep the vehicle for several years with hopes of driving 200k plus miles.

I welcome your thoughts and advice.

In fact..

I just did my transmission fluid change.. last month.. it really makes a difference.. my car runs like the first day i bought it! The fluid in the torque converter was really dirty, its not a cheap service.. each 1 litre sythentic transmission fluid cost $20 canadian each.. you need 7 1/2 litres.. and you need more fluid to flush the converter.. than you have to add a magnet to the pan $3 canadian, and new filter ($12 canadian).. and replace the allen drain bolt with washer. I recommend you to do it if you are like me and plan to keep the car for a long time.

I wouldn't do it if it were mine. I'm not going to say it's totally dumb to do it, but myself I wouldn't.
Tabo is confusing dirty with "black". It isn't dirt that makes the fluid dark, it's graphite in the friction plates that does that. It's fine if it looks like that.
If you do it, just put the magnet in the pan. If you have the older style valve body, the covers will kind of go on, but not without modifications, and even then it's not a real good fit.

alex,

Just finished researching this topic myself..

With our ML having 125K miles and wanting it to last, changing the fluid seems ideal. Headed to the dealer next week for the fluid change, including the torque converter.

Gilly,

Could you elaborate on the modifications required to the valve body/caps for them to fit properly? I would greatly appreciate being able to have my ducks in a row when chatting with the tech.

Is this info accessible in WIS?

FR
