As you know, I have a 2003 ML350.
I'd like to install the overhead trip computer and found the following different part #'s for the overhead trip computer: 1) A 163 540 64 11 ($265 @ dealer) 2) A 163 540 52 11 ($176 @ dealer) 3) A 163 540 56 11 ($373 @ dealer) My dealer verified that #3 is the right overhead trip computer for my ML350. But I found #2 on eBay for much much less but it obviously has a different part # than what my local dealer told me. #1 came from one of the install documentation that a fellow ML'er found on eBay that was then retrofitted to an ML and it also worked. My question is: - What is the difference between all part #'s? - Will #2 work with my ML? As always, thanks in advance for your help. E! Last edited by s4toml; 03-07-2003 at 10:08 AM. |

It'd take a bit of research.
I believe #3 is probably the one, but just installing a trip computer on the newer version trucks probably won't give the best results. The compass receiver is inside the tailgate, and I'n sure would also need to be retrofitted. Gilly (G-I-L-L-Y)

Thanks for any additional info Gilly
and sorry for the misspelling.
Maybe the only difference between the parts is the compass feature? |

Tom:
I didn't see any info in WIS about retrofitting a trip computer, so I don't know if what you want to do will work. Not saying it won't. We have 2 different trip computers in stock, which would both be for the older model ML's I believe (98 up to 2000 or so). The numbers we stock are 163-540-12-11, and 163-540-52-11. I am not real sure which one the 163-540-56-11 would fit. it seems like the only real good way to find out which one will fit a particular truck is to have a parts guy look it up with the trucks VIN number. I would tend to believe that the only one which would physically fit the dome lamp assembly (if it is even possible for a trip computer to fit a non-trip computer dome lamp assm like the older ones) would probably be the 163-540-64-11 number, the expensive one. And even then I am 1. Unsure it will actually fit your domelamp assm, and 2. Unsure if the wiring is there. I would also look under the threshold plate at the tailgate opening (on the rear cargo area floor) and see if the wiring is there for the compass assembly. If it is there, i would also order the compass assembly so you could have it all working. If the wiring is present under the sill plate, I would sort of assume that the rest of the wiring is there also. Gilly
