When to replace drive belt

Should one replace the drive belt after a fix time interval/ mileage or should one replace it only when it shows sign of wear.

Just with signs of wear. The best place to detect signs of your belt needing replacement is on the "back" side, where the 5 ribs are. Look at this area of the belt in a spot in the routing where a pulley is resting one the "flat" or ungrooved side of the belt, such as the tensioner pulley. Look for cracks on the peaks of the grooves.
