Question Porterfield Brake Pads

Just got a set of front and rear Porterfield brake pads for my '00 ML55. The rear pads have a slot (off to the side) for the sensor wire to slip into ok. But the front pad sensor wire slot is in the middle of the pad, looks like the spring hold-down clip would be in the way. Might be able to get the sensor wire in under the hold down clip, not sure. Anyone had this experience? Also, if the sensor wire is tied off to the side and not used, will I get any warning lights. Not exactly sure how the sensor works.
