5 Replacement Transmissions in 43,000 miles

OK, I buy a 99 ML320 and at 18k, the first trans fails, and then by 43k, in goes number five. I am told the same thing over and over again, the trans is bad and they keep replacing them. The way I see it, something else is bad causing the trans to fail. The dealer says this type of thing never happens and mine is the fluke. In the mean time, my warranty is up in 30 days and the ML is in the shop again for driveline hum and vibration.

Anyone with thoughts, please fire away

Re: 5 Replacement Transmissions in 43,000 miles

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't and parts replaced by the dealer covered for 12 months/12000 miles or the balance of your Factory Warranty, which ever is the longer?. If so, that would mean your Trans is covered until 55K?

Not 100% reassuring I know, but better than nothing.

I concurr though, if I had that many Trannies replaced, I would be talking to MB!!

12k/12months

I was told by my MB dealer AND MBUSA that any work done during the warranty period is NOT covered by the 12k/12months. I was very unhappy about that and told MBUSA and my dealer that I felt I was being abused. They did not care. However, after talking to the GM of the dealership they agreed to go 50/50 on the cost of a new MAF. By the way, the MAF has been replaced only 5000 miles previous. What a crock!!! Way to go MB.

You are having the 5th gearbox installed and no one has had a
Technical Specialist involved? Not to sound rude but, where the
H..L are these repairs being done? Normally, if a vehicle is getting a second trans repair done, the factory gets involved
in a big way. Each warranty tranny repair costs MB from 2 to 6
thousand dollars. If you are getting tranny #5 thats about $25K
for this one issue. They need to get someone involved that
knows what he is doing. Have your Service Manager call the
Regional Service and Parts Operational Manager (SPOM) of
your area and get a Technical Specialist involved to really figure
this thing out.

Good luck.
DR.D

P.s. If getting a second MAF sensor in 5K miles, someone sould
look for a leaking airfilter, warped airbox, or leaking intake pipes.
