Electronic noise in '99 ML430

Hi,
The car is a 1999 ML430 with 55,000 miles.

Lately, when starting for the first time of the day, the car produces a very high pitched electronic whine in the cabin. It lasts about twenty seconds and then stops. The noise has never occured during starts throughout the rest of any given day. Also, the car does not do it every day. Just some. Any ideas??

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, there is a cooling fan in the computer/fuse box that pulls air from the cabin. Many times that fan motor will make noise durning the first few minutes of operation.

Good luck!

My guess would be the air injection pump, it's an electric motor on the engine which pumps air into the exhaust manifolds. it only works when the engine is cold started also.
