ML430 CC controls - simple question

Hi,
In a '99 ML430 are the a/c controls meant to be illuminated at night? If so, what would prevent the light from working??

Bulbs burn out all of the time. You can PULL off the control knobs to replace the bulbs.

I pulled the knobs off . On the left-most control (fan speed) there is no bulb visible. Just a circle of plastic that is backed with white in the (appx) 7 o'clock to 1 o'clock positions - no bulb in sight.

In the center control when the knob is removed there is a circle of plastic divided into two white and some transparent segments. There is a hole with an MB minibulb recessed into it. (recessed so far that it is impossible to gat at it.)

In the far right control when the knob is removed (air distribution control) there is a circle of plastic with no bulb visible.

How do I remove the plastic circles to gain access to the blown bulbs? If these plastic circles clip into place I'd like to make sure that I don't damage the mechanism when removing them.
