Donnie:
What I am referring to is the readaptation procedure that must be done in order to have misfire recognition.

John:
It could be lots of things, I think I'd take it to either a dealer or a "better" MB specialist shop.

Thanks Gilly. Final question (I hope)... I'm headed up there this Thursday. I have the option to go to the Benz dealer in Syracuse or Binghamton NY... would like to pick the best. Have you had any experience with either one, Or should I post a quesytion on the MB Shop thread? Thanks

Toddo... Your timing is great. I just got back from NY with the answer (or at least the "fix") for Gilly and the others who tried to help out.

My daughter picked the car up from the independent shop and it ran okay, but the check engine light came back on after she accelerated hard. (By the way, this shop had the car for 2 weeks and wouldn't take a dime, since they couldn't fix it. All he wanted was an e-mail back about what the dealer found.)

Next day I took the car out (check engine light on) and drove it at 2500 RPM in 3rd gear and 4th gear for about 2 minutes each. Then I stopped in the station and topped it off with premium, and tightened the gas cap to several clicks. When I started the car the check engine light was OUT and it drove fine, though I didn't drive it much or too hard. (One could ask - Was it fixed at that point?)

I took the car to Holtz Mercedes in Rochester. They pulled the codes and said it was the mass air sensor, and they replaced it, saying it was a common problem. The check engine light was out when we took it in (per comment above), and it has stayed out. We drove it hard and up and down the Ithaca hills afterwards... no problems. All seems well after several days of normal driving.. Whether or not it was 'fixed' before it got to Holtz, I'll never know, but at least that's one less problem to occur in the near future. (For kicks, I did get on it pretty hard on the Interstate just prior to getting to Rochester, no light, no hesitation.) Gut feeling is that Holtz was right and did a good job. They said there was no indication of any crank angle sensor issue, and there was no reflashing or resetting of the computer needed.

Mass Air Sensor - $480. Problem gone.

Toddo - I don't know why your post shows up 'after' I posted my reply, but look up about 2 posts and you will see the final answer in this case. Good luck.

Had same problem.

I had the same problem with my ML. Same symptoms of what you described. The dealer went even to replace a new DME and AMF. Now just watch out for the harmonic balancer. Mine failed at 70K.

I was just reading my old posts and noticed that I never brought this one to closure. As Benzmac said, he seen the same symptions when the mass air flow sensor failed. That was the problem. Dealer diagnosed and replaced it and all was fine...
