Thumbs down Anyone had their ML catch on fire?

I joined this site only to try and find some information for my Father. He "was" the proud owner of a 1999 ML320 until yesterday, when a short under the dash proceeded to burn out the entire interior of the vehicle. Luckily no one was driving it and no one was injured. He is now left with a charred and totalled heap of scrap metal. The vehicle has been towed to the local MB dealer, although it's final fate is still unknown.

Throughout his 50k miles of ownership, he has a few problems including a bad speed sensor on the tranny, bad power window relay, and all the gray color coming off the drivers seat leaving the plastic on the bottom bright yellow. Overall it was a satisfactory vehicle, but he even admitted it was nothing special.

I am trying to find out if there are any other ML owners that have walked outside to see their vehicle engulfed in flames. Please help me with any information you may have, it would be nice if we could prove this was a vehicle defect and get some of his money back on it.

It can't be that BAD...

The BMW X5 SUV engine fan caught on fire on several BMWs.. A massive recall was made to fix the problem =) LOL

Does your father live in an area where critters can gain access to the ML?

There is a thread in Tech Help regarding small furry animals that regularly chew through wiring harnesses. Could possibly set the tone for a fire!

It is possible it could be critter related. However it is very scary that it burnt so thoroughly in such a short amount of time. It appears to be a more isolated problem as I have yet to find another ML that this has happened to. Thanks for the replies and keep em coming.
