How do you remove the cup holder ?

My passenger cup holder (2000 ML 430) does not stay closed anymore. The part is $36, but the labor to replace it is around $60.

Does anyone know how to take the old one out?

Thanks

pc. of cake............
at bottom there are 2 gears molded to holder on both sides.
Squeeze gently with a finger on one side and they will pop out. then do other side. spring slides out when you remove. Once you get thoose out you will see what to do.

I thought about commenting on this one myself. I believe the 2000 uses the updated cupholder, which really isn't serviceable in the dash, you need to replace the whole thing. On the 98-99's. I repaired alot of those, instead of replacing, there are about 3 parts you can buy to repair the old style cupholders: The spring is the main thing; the cupholders are left open and someone bangs into it with their knee when entering the truck and dislodges the main part of the cupholder, next thing the spring is gone. The other 2 parts are like a black plastic "latch" piece, which is what keeps the cupholder folded up into the recepticle, and also this neat geared wheel part, which makes the cupholder swing in a slow motion kind of move, instead of a quick "flop". These pieces are all pretty easy to install, except the geared wheel can be a pain, but not as big a pain as replacing the whole cupholder assm.. Even if the main recepticle (the part the cup actually sits in) can be removed from a whole assembly and replaced using the old receiver part, and in good conscience this is an appropriate repair, assuming all the other pieces are in good shape.
I tried looking in my info briefly to see if the 2000 had the newer style cupholders, which I consider to be "non-repairable" but came up empty handed so far. IF that's what the 2000 has, depending on the problem, you probably need to replace it. That involves removing the glove box and removing the screw over on the right side of the dash so you can slightly pull out on the right side of the dash, and get your arm in their with a teeny tiny torx socket to remove the cupholder.
If in fact you have the "first version" cupholder, then you just need the "latch piece" that I mentioned in order to fix your cupholder. I don't think they sell parts at all to repair the second version cupholder.

Again..if it pops out on the bottom with not much pressure it should be the same. Good luck.

Even the second style will pop out of it's hinges on the bottom, but on the second style there is something similar to a gas-filled strut, which they went to instead of the spring and geared wheel set-up they had on the first couple years. You'll pop it out of there and have this gas-strut thingie attached to the cupholder yet.
