First post to this forum. As stated in the subject I’m having a problem with the volume level on the Nav part of the MCS barely being heard over the other sound functions. Just had 28K service ‘B’ done. Some facts before service: 1)Upgraded to 2004 Nav. CD’s (included a software update) sound worked as before upgrade. 2)Nav sound level set to MAX. 3)During ‘B’ service had flip out window switch problem corrected from previous dash control work, P side switch now opens P side flip out window not D side flip out window. Of course I could take it back to the dealer, but if it could be something simple as resetting the MCS I could save the time that is needed to set up an appointment along with the time needed to drop it off. I do not know if anything related to the ‘B’ service could cause this to happen. And I have no idea were the flip out window switches connection needed to be corrected or what was needed to access the connection. Any suggestion would be most welcomed.
For got to say it is a MY02 ML500 I purchased used.

Push the button which repeats the last NAV voice command, can't remember what this button is labelled, possibly "repeat". When the NAV voice is talking, you will then adjust the volume level using the normal radio volume adjustment knob. Very simple.

l've often, had a problem with the Nav voice...l have done what you suggested several times....When she is speaking, l adjust the main volume button, and lower it....but when the next command comes out, it is at the same high level it was before...l've just come to accept this...could there be something else l'm missing...........

That's a weird one, never heard of that. When you adjust the Nav voice, it should remain where you have it set for that function, but adjusting the Nav voice shouldn't alter the sound system settings (not saying that this is what's happening).
Possible bad MCS or Nav unit?????
Anyone else with MCS Nav care to comment?

Well…. Since you asked. While I had the NAV/VOICE button pushed in and then turned the volume to increase the NAV voice the RADIO volume also increased. However, going back to the RADIO and lowering the volume did NOT effect the NAV volume. As I noted in my first message, I had selected the MAX in the NAV options. If I remember you have three choices, a MIN and MAX and one in between, do not recall what it is called. Since I could barely hear the NAV voice, I figured setting this option to MAX would fix my problem.. Wrong!!! So this option has another function….

The point is to get it so that the Nav system is giving an spoken direction. How you do this is up to you. When the nav is giving a spoken direction, ie "continue to follow the road" or "Turn left in 500 feet", (the actual command being given doesn't matter) THAT is when you adjust the volume. The button I spoke of before ("repeat" or whatever that button says) just makes it easier to anticipate when a command will be given, as it is used to repeat the last spoken command.

I thought the same thing about the min-max selection. But I believe that has to do with the amount (number) of voice commands that you want to hear. (more detail/less detail).

Mr. Gilly – Point taken. I did indeed try to adjust the NAV volume while she was talking on her own, to no avail. And this was the reason I started this thread. It was not until I tried your method did I have success at adjusting the NAV volume. And it is still at the same level to this day. Perhaps the fact that I held the NAV/VOICE button in while I adjusted the volume is why the RADIO volume also adjusted. This would have been my fault for incorrectly following your instructions… I will be starting a road trip tomorrow and everything is working just fine with the NAV and I will not be changing anything..

Mr. George – Thank you for clearing that up for me. I do agree with you that this option is for the number of navigation commands. I guess I was just stuck on the volume thing and could not see beyond that problem and jumped to the wrong conclusion when I saw MIN-MAX for VOICE. The value of this forum is so great!!! :p
