Reality TV?

I dunno but its just really starting to make me sick. The Swan, i dunno exactly why but its the worst for me. Maybe its because it capitalizes on and exploits women who have extremely low self esteem. I guess it makes them feel better or whatever, probably what the show's creators would say, however shallow and resentful it may make them afterwards. Whatever, I suppose I'm just tired of seeing stupid people on television, in fear I may someday meet people of equal caliber. What do you think about it all?

I believe TV and its programming have lost it. What happened to the discovery channel? All the shows seem like a very long advertisement! I have stopped watching TV completely. Every show either wants to sell a product that you "need", push a message about politics, behavior, language, or anything else they see fit, and I see a disturbing negative slant quickly becoming vertical in the intellectual area of (insert program here) ... I have stopped watching completely. When I do see it, I am amazed how bad it is. Does 1984 come to mind….. wait a second, if they reduce thought to a level of immediate acceptance (dangerously close) there will never be a need for "thought police"......

It scares me to think how many people watch tv and take it as fact, some people at my workplace quote news stories and defend them as if it were their life!

I do not think I will expose my children to the tv, my parents did the same favor for me! (do you think that has anything to do with my position?)

I do not see it as entertainment – more of a waste of time. What can I do in ½ hour that is productive? (yes, I do realize I spend hours on end on a automotive enthusiasts site doing nothing but BSing, but I do need some time to relax and learn more intresting things about diesel automobiles !)

some food for thought....

I watch ER, the Law & Order series, and The West Wing...the latter two were recent additions; I used to only watch ER. I also watch LAX at the moment, but only for the airplanes (and to laugh at the absurdity of it all)...it's a moot point; I think that show's on its way out...

Other than those shows and the news, I don't turn my TV on, and haven't for years. Reality TV is an insult to the collective intelligence of the viewers IMHO...but it seems ot be the wave of the future; most newly-introduced non-reality shows this season have done quite poorly, although that's likely due in part to the low quality of the writers (because all the "good" ones are scripting the reality shows ).

For those mature enough to remember . . .

Reality TV is to broadcast entertainment, what Disco was to music.

I'm not a reality TV person, but there's a spoof 'reality tv' show on now called 'My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss' in which this team of people pretend to run a 'the Apprentice' sort of show with these unwitting participants who think they're competing in a real show. I caught it for the first time last night. The 'management team' playing the boss and his assistants basically spew a bunch of ludicrous, Dilbertesque nonsense and send these people out on challenges in the same way Trump does on his show, and seeing the participants' reactions (everything from eye-rolling to sycophantic head-nodding) is priceless.

That's the only reality show I'll watch

The only show I'm following regularly this season is 'Lost'. And wow, that's a really good show.

The only serial that I'm following is Enterprise. Otherwise, I have it on History channel, or some other similar channel offering something that isn't an insult to the viewers intelligence.

I hope TV get's worse. When it's so bad that I cannot find anything on 60 some odd channels to watch, my lazy side loses, and I actually get things done around the house.

Reality TV? An oxymoron at best (especially the "moron" part)!

This stuff is so rehearsed and orchestrated it's not funny.

Ever see how much set equipment is required to properly broadcast a scene? How can anyone feel like they are in reality with all that gear surrounding the area?

Especially "Survivor"..."omigod, I'm stranded out here with 200 TV crewmen!"

Need to spice up a plot? Ask a loaded question to one of the cast members and edit out everything but the "juicy parts"...then show it to a rival cast member and voila! Instant conflict!

Think being on the show is going to parlay into a budding TV career? Read the fine print on your contract...your career is pretty much toast after the reality series is over!

Ratings are still high, so if MBShop members aren't watching, then there are witless individuals somewhere that are!

My favs? American Chopper, American Hot Rod, and Monster "anything"! Not intellectual viewing per se, but I like building stuff and after a hard day of work, don't care to do much thinking either...

What about the alternative???

Scripted shows are not the panacaea of intellectualism you guys seem to be indicating. Take a look at shows like OC and North Shore. Which is worse really?
I like the nonfiction shows. Generally I'm switching between History, Discovery, TLC, Science Channel, Discovery Times, History International, and National Geographic. Problem is I think they're starting to run out of programming because lately it seems like I've seen most of what they're showing. If its not this stuff then I love the reality TV.

These shows are the worst IMO.

Horrible. I think most tv is today too. Including the all day "news" channels that can update us on the Peterson trial all day.

The stations make out like bandits though. Instead of paying actors xxx,xxx amount per show, they have a choice of morons (they line around the block to get on these shows) willing to do anything for the purse at the end. The remainder (who don't win) usually get nothing. Seems a lot cheaper to me.

And the above poster is right, this sure ain't 'reality'.....

Yeah the news is pretty bad too. I saw the commercial preview, said "internet teen groups are they really just meat markets?" (then it shows like 15 yr old girls half naked and going further) then "THE PROBLEM IS older men may be going to the sites." I dunno if I'm the only one who gets it, like the rest is OK, not that old guys picking up underage girls is good, just kinda struck me odd how they worded it. Depressing to me how things have become. I normally just watch movies, and cartoons at least they're funny and enjoyable. Oh and football. The car shows and F1 are usually good, except the SEMA coverage, more like a prostitute convention. Pathetic. I like attractive women as much as the next guy but kinda turns me off when they parade their bodies around like whores, especially around cheap ugly tastelessly modified japanese automobiles.

spike tv

i don't have tv here i just read about it in the paper but this caught my eye.....wwe is going to have to find a new home. seems spike tv is planning to drop "reality shows" in favor of scripted entertainment according to an unnamed exec. i never thought wwe was a reality show. i always thought there was a script. thats why goldberg isn't seen anymore he says he doesn't like the out of ring violence to women.

yay goldberg.

wwe isn't scripted?

I mostly watch the History Channel and Speed. Thats about it TLC is all about home make over shows and the Discovery Channel isn't as good as they used to be. I go to Fox and Cspan for news. As for reality shows I do watch the Aprentence(sp?), I like watching the way Mr. Trump works. Also the Sci Fi fan in me makes me watch Stargate, but I have been following that series since before it was popular. This season is the best ever the new shows are so good. Also how can I forget the Simpsons? Adult swim on cartoon network also has some funny stuff on it.
