Afghan Crop Service reports: Poppies up 40%

Good to see that US' war on drugs is going as good as the war on terrorism. The poppy crop is expected to be 40% above last years' record. Afghan raw opium now supplies about 85% of the world, displacing Burma's golden triange.

Glad we got rid of the terrorists and taliban.

How else can they make their money anyways? Growing dates? I doubt Afghans care if some westerner wants to get high off opium.

A colleague of mine is working in Afghanistan trying to find ways of getting them not to grow poppy, but given it is the most lucrative cash crop in the world he will have as much success as trying to f*** a porcupine.

No blood for opium!

(Don't tell me, opium is now $1 a gallon more than it used to be...)

Haliburton has already won a no-bid government contract to "manage" Afghan natural resources...or maybe to build an opium pipeline to the Gulf of Oman.

It might be as simple as right good - left bad, but at the top they're all eating at the same place with each other. Status quo bad - rebel good.

Not sure where you are trying to go with this, but hey, it's how the warlords make their money. Simple as supply and demand, just like Columbia. And unlike coffee in Columbia, there is no other cash crop that can replace poppy there presently.
