need help with accident report

I'm asking this on behalf of my friend who got into an auto accident. He has been hit by another car on an intersection. The other driver ran the red light and hit him on the side. Left my friend unconscious for a while, in the meanwhile the paramedics arrived and so did the police.
The police asked nothing from my friend, got the story from the other driver, and left off. Now he is told to get a report in a few days from the police station. Meanwhile, he was informed by the towing company's driver that the other driver who ran the red light never got a ticket and had also lied to the police officer that my friend was the one who had actually run the red light.
My friend still awaits the police reports but fears that the wrong information will be reflected in the report, since he was never even asked about what happened by the police.
What should be done in this case ? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Were there any other witnesses? If not, it's one person's word against another (also taking into account the physcial evidence of the crash).

Find out who the investigating officer is and have your friend contact him directly with respect to providing any additional information. It is usually rare, after the fact, that the other driver would get cited.

your friend probably ought to look into retaining an attorney especially if his car is totaled...

In our state, you would contact both the police and your insurance agent to report the details of the accident. The insurance company typically does the fighting for you . . . at least mine does.
