quick question about lcd monitors

I'm looking to buy and LCD monitor for my desktop at school. I'm looking at mostly 17" models but the most of the specs say the optimal resolution is 1280x1024. I'm using 1024x768 now and almost always do. does the quality of the display fall off if im not using the optimal resolution. Also I'm buying it from a site called newegg.com. Not sure if you all know about it but they have some great deals up there. thanks

Hi,

Yes it won't be as sharp if u use it at a lower resolution.

However, I don't find it annoying when I play video games.

But when I use my computer for work-related stuff, I prefer to leave it in its native resolution (optimal resolution)

then again it really isn't that bad.

Why do you almost always use 1024x768? video games?

BTW, check out some of the newer DVI-based LCD monitors too. I didn't care so much for DVI (Digital Video Interface) - until I bought a monitor that takes in both inputs (DB15 and DVI)

BTW, I think 17" is a bit small for 1280x1024 - check out the 18" ones. The difference in price is probably very small.

Good luck!

I guess I go with that resolution just as a personal preference and for gaming. I just don't like the way the desktop looks when the resolution is that big. It just makes everythign seem tiny to me. I'm looking at some BenQ monitors I don't think there using DVI though. Don't you need a different type of cable for those monitors?

What about reliability?

The guy that sold me my pc, an independant electronics shop who also sells reconditioned computers etc, told me when I asked about LCD that they were problematic!

Is this true?

For brands, it isn't a good idea to skimp out. When I was in the tech room of a CompUSA store, they had many LCD returns (near 30), mostly lesser known brands with a few Sony and Viewsonic's. DVI is a must if you are a gamer. Although there MAY still be some refresh rate lag, its still much better than the old 15 pin connector. Also, if you are going to use it for gaming, NECs and I think Samsungs are up there with refresh rates.

Newegg is a great site with very good deals. I've built many computers with components purchased through them.

Koreans are moving up

I believe it, despite not being a fan of Korean products (i've pretty much banned myself from Samsung cell phones but thats for a different cause), they are growing rapidly and very well. At the moment they have the fastest cell phone internet networks in the world, and their automotive industry is growing fast.

Taiwan is also growing fast, most computer related boards come from Taiwan these days.

And yes, Samsung has good refresh rates, didn't read up on LG, but NEC has had some of the best refresh rates for a while now.
