The Nixon pardon, and especially its timing, is one of the all time lows of presidential authority, not because of the pardon itself, but how it was reached and executed.

The pardon was "negotiated" with Vice President Ford on August 1, 1974, a week before the resignation. Chief of staff, Alexander Haig, met alone with Ford and raised with him the question of a "pardon to the president should he resign." Ford asked about the powers of pardon. Mr. Haig handed him a legal memo concluding that the president had authority to grant a pardon at any time, even before any criminal action had been initiated.

The next day, on advice of his own counsel, Ford told Haig he could not make a commitment that would advance him to the presidency. That left Haig and Nixon free to conclude that Ford would play ball, but could not be in the position of establishing a quid pro quo.

Ford announced the pardon on Sunday morning, Sept. 8. The special prosecutor's office had been working on 10 areas of possible action against Nixon, from harassment of enemies to illegal tax deductions. The pardon wiped the slate clean.

And Clinton was so upset that Gore lost and couldn't do the same thing to negate the huge black mark on his "legacy" so to say.

Funny, what you you have to say about Clintons pardoning of his brother and the others? those were at the very end of his term, and those were all worked out long before that time.Where was the Democratic uproar to that?

Remember Filegate with Hillary......the files that turned up inthe Residency of the whitehouse that "Nobody " knows put there....well every person is logged going in adn out of that place.......everyone......they know it was hillary who did it.

And Janet Reno.......the mass murderer of the people at WACO. you expect her to have upheld the law.....she was a parrot of the clintons....

I'm surprised that Congressman Toejam didn't get a fancy job in the telecommunications industry. Telecom lobbyists have been filling his pockets for years.

Take my word for it....the Telecom industry is NOT the place you want to be right now if you have great prospects someplace else.

bd speaks truth. I've been in IT in telecom for over five years now, and it's been a rough ride.

Oh shi-, I think I just admitted I don't have bright prospects anywhere else

What is the deal with that industry? They have been in a slump for almost five years now. Why no recovery?

Has to do with overbuilding in the last 10 years.....the Dot com bubble bursting and a lot of places going under.......left the market flooded with excess capacity....drives prices down and profits along with it.

Think about the Market being suddenly flooded with Cheap Chinese computers for $100 each, and then have an influc of IT trained people from India nad China flooding the area...all of them willing to work for minimum wage....think that wouldn't hurt your bottom line? THere is a recovery but its slow.

I don't think it qualifies as the MOST blatant abuse of taxpayers........but I agree with you otherwise. It's ridiculous. We need another "entitlement program" like we need a f***ing hole in our heads.

On the subject of Mr. Tauzin's new career.....there is no law that prevents a former Congressman from taking any particular job in the private sector. But I must admit, it is a pretty glaring revelation of his motivations while he was in office.

I can READ and couldn't help but take notice who decided to bring up the issue of "pardons" so perhaps you didn't go back far enough in the thread. Perhaps.

Oh and the point of the thread of using ones position to infuence things in office to pay off in personal gain when one leaves office is not the same? Regardless of which party is involved?
