I think you didn't read what I wrote. The SELLER requested cash.. and from my oppinion, I believe it was tax related.

i purchased the car already, and didn't pay in CASH. I wired the money instead. I won't have a family member fly across the nation with cash in hand(atleast not in the amount I am paying) to do a purchase.

Also, I am not the one that wrote about how to have the seller say I paid less for the car than what i did. Go back and read who wrote it.. it wasn't me.

Lawyer and jury bashing? when did I bash any or either of them? What thread did I even post something about them??

Besides all that Snibble Wodnek is right. The tax will probably be computed and collected from the state in which YOU register the car.. having nothing to do with the seller and a good possibility of having nothing to do with what you actually paid for the car. So you may have little control over what tax they say you owe.

In NC I paid more tax in 1999 on the rusted out '76 SLC than I think I ever paid for any car (including a new at the time '77 Trans AM). The lady looked at the computer and gave me the figure for tax to pay. Nothing like KBB or NADA regarding "shape the car is in", she didn't care how much I paid for the car, just the price of a Mercedes Sports Light Coupe that gave her the value in the computer. I was astounded. The friend standing beside me was astounded. I think she was astounded at the dollar amount of tax. If I wished to argue the tax I first had to pay what she decreed and then send my complaint to somewhere in Charlotte. (not Raleigh the state capital) and if it was found in my favor, the "overpayment" would be sent to me.

I bought my present 300D in NC and moved to FL. Florida has no reciprocation with NC so I paid the amount in her computer for that tax AND paid FL sales tax! She had no proof of my paying the sales tax in NC and since there was no reciprocal agreement between the states, I would have to pay the sales tax also in FL. She did tell me that when I "renew" my tags/sticker, I would pay a lot less than what I was paying that first time.

In reading this post, I thought you were just asking for some help/advice regarding a "long distance purchase" and I never thought you were trying to escape some tax payment but also knew that the state of Ohio will get all the tax from you that they compute for your "new to you" car. What's been enjoyable to me is "feeling" you passion for this car and knowing you can't wait to get back to drive it. I wish I could find one that I'm passionate about getting! I think you've dotted all the i's and crossed the t's and hope you have fun with your "new" Mercedes!

Maybe you could post large pics at another site and give us the link?

Some states don't give a hoot what you paid for it....they tax it on Blue book value.....and its up to you to prove to them that its worth far less than Blue book.

Of course thats about as productive as talking to a brick wall.

WOW!!!! I thought I lived in WisTAXsin!!! Here you fill out the paperwork at the DMV and write in what you paid and pay sales tax. (5.1% here) I have never had them dispute what I put down. Our state Titles have a place where the seller writes down what they collected and you get to deduct your trade in if you have one. No personal property taxes on vehicles.

We have personal property tax PLUS the sales tax........and those are on what they say its worth. Even if it isn't....you can constest it but thats real hard to do.

My suggestion regarding the tax issue (based on my experience) is to have the seller give you a bill of sale reciept (expecially if they want a cash sale). Go to your local DMV with your title and bill of sale. The DMV will have you fill out a form, hand them your out of state title, bill of sale, and check for the taxes due and they will mail you back a title for your car in the state you regisitered it. If you are missing any of the above information, the DMV will tell you to come back when you obtain it.

PA was like that...........I do't remember about Maryland, but I think they used to be too, VA was the first state I lived that did it that way.
