Trying to use Lotus Notes Calendar...
...but keep getting a "The Doclink database cannot be located" error. I just want to use a simple friggin' calendar that I can edit and then UL/DL to my stupid POS Motorola phone (I'm really wishing I wouldv'e kept my startac!)
Does anyone know if this is even possible without being connected to some database somewhere other than my own machine? I cannot find ANY way to make Lotus Notes work for anything other than a stupid address book and I have plenty of FREE address book programs, I didn't need to spend a rediculous amount of $'s on this POS if I can't even use it. HELP!!!

Lotus Notes is client/server only. It does not work as a stand alone e-mail program on a PC getting POP mail. But, you should be able to define a local notes database, File -> Database -> New and run it as a local only program. Down at the bottom right hand corner you will be able to click the location and 'edit current' or do a File -> Preferences and go from there.
How did you get a copy? Are you an IBMer?

So I still don't know how to get a simple damn calendar to come up. I can create a "database" as you said, but the link to calendar STILL comes up with the doclink error. I just think I've been had with Lotus' advertising that this is a Calendar program. It's not. There is NO WAY to JUST use the calendar.

Lotus Notes is designed for companies
The program is definitely designed as client/server. Even if you use both the email and calendar parts of lotus notes(part of the same database, by the way),you're only using maybe 1/8 of what Notes is capable of. It's a document management program designed for large companies who want control over what employees can see, create, and share. It's all about security. It also takes up a huge amount of space on your HD, mainly for it's other features you're not using and can't use unless you're a Notes designer or administrator, which you need a bit of training for.
I say bag it. If you paid for your copy, find out who 'sold' it to you and demand your money back as it's really no use to a single user. It sounds to me like you should have Lotus Organizer, if you want the Lotus design. I've met many who say great things about it. I've never used it.Maybe that's what should have been sold to you, especially if you were 'advised' by someone at an unnamed discount computer store...crompusa or something like that. It's a stand alone that takes up much less space and is under $100 for a brand new copy. You can probably buy a used copy cheaper. Also, I think there are lots of other calendar programs to suit your needs. Go to cnet.com and do a search. They have lots of reviews and links. I hope this is helpful.

Lotus Notes has always been billed as 'groupware' and aimed at corporations, and many features depend on their being a server for your client to synch with.
That said, I have the Lotus suite installed here, and seem to be able to bring up my Lotus calendar (Organizer) without synching up to anything or even being logged into the corporate network I have Lotus for. A handy way to calendar for free is to use My Yahoo. I think you can even sync up a PDA with a Yahoo calendar, if that's your thing. Last edited by benzene; 02-10-2005 at 05:18 PM. |

Thanks for all the help and encouragement everyone. The reason I chose it is that we have Lotus for other things and only Lotus Notes and Outlook Express are what Motorola says will work with their Mobile Phone Tools for a calendar and I'm not ABOUT to use Look-out Express. I'll find another way or a hack or something. Organizer would probably be better, but it's not "supposed" to be compatible with the motorola phone (V265.)

Get Lotus Organizer. Notes is for companies not individuals.

Anyone try Palm Desktop? I used it for years standalone without a PDA and it worked great. You can download it at Palms website for free (full version).
