Red face need help on computer virus protection

Hi every one. I must say what a great site, the people and the info make this the best site going.(imho).It seems so adult(?) compared to other sites i happened onto. Love it, possibly addicted as i now am to Mercedes.
Hey we all have our problems .
Now for my current problem.my virus-firewall protection expires in a few days, think its norton. anyways i have heard of free protection from some other souces.
Does it work as well as what i can buy?
Does it also include firewall protection?
Where can i get it from?
Any help would be greatly apreciated.
I now have windows 2000 me,which has worked great so far
Thank you
Rich

Clearly the choice over Norton or McAfee!

I still use and recommend ZONEALARM PRO (it costs) for a firewall although they used to offer a free version, don't know if they do anymore. Still rated the best among all the firewall producers. It does not interfere with AVG and vice versa.

Hi, Rich -

Great advice on the two posts above. I myself use AVG, and it's a great piece of software. The only drawback is that their update server can become easily bogged down, and updates are occasionally not downloaded in a timely fashion.

ZoneAlarm is a great firewall - many of my Win98 clients use that, and it does the trick. Not sure what your Internet setup is, but if you have a router (wired or wireless) somewhere in your setup, that serves a big deterrant for hackers as your Internet IP is broadcasted, and you're behind the router's firewall, giving you an added level of protection.

Good luck!
Michael

Check out the Virus Bulletin website to see how various antivirus software stacks up:
VB 100%

I really like NOD32 for antivirus.
Use the default settings and you'll be fine.

I would renew your subscription and stay with Norton. Excellent updates and a rock-solid product. There is a reason one is free and the other not.

Thanks for the replys. I see a few schools of thought here. Have to go off to work but will look into both. I am leaning toward norton for the simple fact that it is a large proven product.
Thanks for the replys

Best Anti-Virus is no Anti-Virus. Instead, partition your hard drive into at least C: and D:, then install Mozilla, Netscape or Firefox on D:, followed by un-installing Internet Explorer. Also, use the e-mail software that comes with Mozilla, or stick with a Web based e-mail, but obviously running it under Mozilla. I've been running this way- totally unprotected for several years, and occasionally will run free on-line virus, ad-ware and spyware checks- always comes up clean. Added bonus- you don't get the performance robbing damage caused by AV and Firewall software.

Thanks for all the replys. Well. after looking at the differant items available i went back with norton.
At 29.95 i thought it was such a deal and like some one said ,a rock solid product.
Well bought it and put in my renewal code, then what do you know but i cannot get on line anymore. called norton about the problem and for 29.95 more they will walk me through the repair that their product caused.
before i found out it was norton that caused the problem i spent hours with my dsl service trying to connect.
seems like if i turn off norton i can get on line
what a deal
well i got around this by using the web which does work with norton
also would have been nice if the norton people had a little better english skills as he had to repeat every thing 3-4 times.
oh well thanks for the help people
