I have no qualms about spending an outrageous sum on an appliance...as long as it gets USED!

I had a boss who bought one of those slick KitchenAid mixers...he was single and didn't cook nor bake, but he thought it looked cool on his kitchen counter...

It's ironic that were talking about spending big $ on appliances on a Mercedes Forum.

Jennair has a relatively new line of mixers & blenders (Artrezzi) that are very expensive and essentially designed specifically to look good on counters.

Wow... mind if I ask what some of you guys' monthly take-home is? I suppose I'd see it differently if I weren't on the bottom of the pile, so to speak, but I could NEVER bring myself to spend even close to $100 on a toaster... let alone $400. Again, it's a matter of perspective, I'm sure. Who knows how I'd feel if I were bringing home an actual paycheck. Oh well! Just curious as to what folks who buy these things make. Now, I have a cool old kitchenaid mixer I found at the Salvation Army. Like other expensive, well-made things at my house (like my Mercedes), I found it cheap and lucked out. I'm all for quality, but only if it's a real bargain.

Until then, my DeLonghi countertop toaster oven from the thrift store will have to do for my morning Eggos.

I should add... I think it's hilarious that this thread has generated so much interest!

PS -- avoid the "Krab" meat at WalMart.

Thanks to the taxes on my house that due to rapidly escalating prices is now worth about $650,000 dollars my paycheck does not go nearly as far as it did 7 years ago.

I may soon start looking through the local Salvation Army....and other thrift stores for things.

I guess its a matter of perspective. I rather spend $100 on a toaster which hopefully will last my lifetime then spend $25 for 4 to 5 toasters over my lifetime.

My father in-law has 4 crappy drills in his garage. All but one still works somewhat. When it came time for me to purchase a drill (shortly after I was married many years ago) I decided that I wanted to purchase one good drill that I can hand-down to my children. I spent $95 on a Milwaukee drill that is still as reliable as the day I bought it. I don't regret spending the money up-front supporting a company that makes good quality products rather then spend $20 on five crappy drills supporting a company that produces crap.

Oh, I agree... when I can buy decent stuff, I do. It's just used or deeply discounted. I can't justify $100 for a toaster any way you cut it. I would do w/o toast if my only choice were a $100 toaster, and I think there are "lesser" toasters out there that will satisfy my toasting needs for many years w/o costing me a month's rent. I guess I should count my blessings... the DeLonghi that I have probably cost someone $75 or more. I got it for $5 at the thrift store; I should quietly thank whomever made that initial investment! My Milwaukee Sawzall was $25 at the Pawn Shop, and my Craftsman drill was $15 from the same Pawn Shop. My Craftsman rolling tool boxes were all scratch 'n dent clearance items, and my Craftsman 125 piece tool kit was on clearance at the Air Force Exchange for $40 (I bought all they had left to give to family and sell to friends).

I ocassionally hit the garage sales and am thrilled with the deals I come away with. I even buy stuff at Harbor Freight and am pleased with their products.

I admit that I am crazy for purchasing a $100 toaster, but I felt I got a good deal since they go for $215 at Williams Sonoma plus I like the differerent way it toasts.

You didn't mention your collection of Vespa & Lambretta scooters. I suspect you have over $100 invested in them.

You're not kidding... the parts on Vespas are bad enough. Lammies are through-the-roof! Luckily, my keeper Vespa cost me $50 (!). The others I have are going to be flogged on Ebay. So the hobby pays for itself. I was riding my P125 around town and a guy saw me... said he had an old scooter at his house. I went and looked, and it was a Lambretta Special that had been left outdoors but had just *4* original miles on it. Picked it up for $200 and turned it Ebay after I realized what parts for resto would cost. That put close to $900 in my pocket.

Anyway, just goes to show I have never paid market price for one of those either! I am a cheap bastard. 8^)

Cool....I have a 1984 Servetta Jet 200 (same as the Innocenti Lambretta) in Italy I use when I make my annual trip there.

I got it in 1991 for the great sum of 50,000 lira about $30 then. with 1,750 original Kilometers....was setting for previous 5 years unused under a cover.

Damn... nice find! If you can round up a shipping container full, do it! You can sell them here even w/o titles for a couple grand if they run. Easy to get titles, too...

Wish I had a Jet 200...

They are scarce in Italy.....I know of three in the town my inlaws live. Other than the one my father-in-law owns.

I want to bring mine back to retore it but shipping would kill me. It needs TLC but still runs like a champ.

Wow! 4 pages so far!!! And the posts have now taken a different tangent!

All this thread needs now is some politics, religion, and a few flames!

I have been tols that there was an initiative in Italy to cut down on emissions, so many of the old 2-stroke bikes were "bought" by the government and junked, Apparently they torch the bike in half; thus, many of the engines are bought and imported to the U.S. I was considering buying one of the newer smallframe electronic ignition 4-speed engines from a place called Pirate Imports. They get theirs from the program mentioned. This may account for the scarcity of scooters over there.

You ought to try and bring it back. Maybe google "Pirate Imports" or call Scooterworks, West Coast Lambrettaworks, Vespa Super Shop, or another of the big importers and see if they would bring yours back in one of their containerloads of scooters!
