Watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off before you go. Some great ideas there!

Lowrys? Please, Gene & Georgetti!

If you just want to stop at a bar, Harry Caray's . . . enjoy the potato chips.

Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Natural History and the Art Museum are within walking distance of each other. Museum of Science and Industry is a few miles south. All are worthwhile. Water Tower Place will appeal if you like shopping.

Lowry's is decent, but if you really want to have steak in Chicago (and who wouldn't) you need to go the either Gibson's or Morton's. These places are the Chicago institutions for steak. There is no steakhouse that better represents the true Chicago experience.

Steakhouses are lame. You telling me you guys can't grill a steak better than these dang overpriced places?

1) Go to Sam's or Costco and buy a whole filet or a whole ribeye.
2) Set it on a rack and set the rack on top of a pan to catch the drips.
3) Put it in your fridge for 3 weeks. Make sure there's lots of circulation.
4) Carve out the icky parts.
5) Ask yourself what size steak you would like and cut exactly the size you want.

Salt and Pepper, toss on grill. Eat.

The in place to eat in Chicago is the Prairie Grass Cafe. They're now open for lunch. It's Sarah Stegner's new place. She used to be exec. chef at the Chicago Ritz Carlton.

I don't know what Kuan is talking about, but there's nothing better than a good steakhouse. Gene & Georgetti's is by far the best. Gibson's and Morton's, although quite tasty, are chain restaurants. If you want real atmosphere you go to G&G. Get their steak and lobster. The garbage salad is unbelievable.
-If you're young, head down to Lincoln Park. Lots of ladies. If you're older, go for drinks on the 95th floor of the Hancock.

If you're younger, check out the Map Room on Armitage in Bucktown. At any given moment they've got 300-500 micros from around the world on their constantly evolving beer list.

With all deference to Kuan, you're not going to get restaurant quality USDA "Prime" at Costco or the grocery store, you're going to find "select" or "choice" but that's not a bad thing for most civilian grilling/roasting. Dry aging at home doesn't have to take a week, you can probably improve a supermarket cut with as little as 3 days worth of moisture loss in the fridge.

For the few times a year that you do go out for a steak, make it the best you can find, otherwise, order the fish.

We used to age our primal cuts for two weeks. Anyway, if you're in Chicago, get your beef from Allen Brothers. If you're anywhere close to Watertower, check out the Ferraris and Bentleys at that car place across from Loyola.

You know my thinking on steak is that it's easy to grill a damn good one, but take it one degree past medium rare and I'd rather eat a piece of chicken breast.

Smaller supermarket cuts, like a 3 or 4 bone rib, would lose too much in that amount of time, hence 3-4 days tops.
