Thumbs down Car jackers chop off fingertip of accountant

[World News] Kuala Lumpur, Mar 31 : In a shocking incident carjackers nipped off the fingertip of a man in the suburbs near here in order to make away with his luxury vehicle whose security system required the owner's fingerprint to start it.

A group of prowling carjackers apprehended 29-year-old accountant K Kumaran's as he was approaching his USD 79,000 dollar S-Class Mercedes Benz car on Monday at Subang Jaya in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, the New Straits Times reported.

Kumaran, who was knocked down by the assailant's car said "I fell face first and four men armed with parangs (machetes) came out of the car. They forced me to hand over my car keys and then asked for my car security card (a keyless alarm system needed to start some Mercedes cars)."

"I told them that my car did not have a security card but a system which requires my fingerprint. They forced me to put my finger on the panel and then started the car," the Times quoted him as saying.

Frustrated that they could not bypass the system, the four men bundled Kumaran into the back seat of the car, stripped him naked and made him put his left hand on the ground. One of the thieves then used his machete to chop off the tip of his index finger, the Times reported.

The gang members also stripped Kumar of his two handphones, gold chain and wallet and pushed him into a drain by the side of the Federal Highway.

The security system accepts the prints of both index fingers and thumbs. Without a fingerprint, the car engine would cut off after a few minutes, he said.

Subang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Fuad Talib confirmed the incident. PTI

I'm glad my 240D needs only a key to start...
