Installing a jump drive

I have an Attache 512M jump drive that I want to use on my old computer (Windows98 SE). I went to the website, downloaded the driver, unzipped it, installed it and then plugged in the jump drive. When I look on the computer I can not locate the jump drive. I have used this brand on my other computer with no problems, but that has a newer OS on it.

What are your thoughts?

MedMech has it right, basically.

Windows 98 doesn't support USB. You need the USB driver(s), which were included in Win98SE.

The driver that I downloaded from Attache said it was for Windows98 SE. Do you mean that I need to download a driver from Microsoft? I am not that computer saavy so I apologize for my questions.

Well since I don't work with Win98 much anymore, I'm just making educated guesses.

But what you probably downloaded were drivers for the Jump Drive, now you need to acitivate the USB ports on the Motherboard.

So yes you need the USB port drivers. I did some searching and did not come up with anything conclusive. I think you need to identify the USB port manufacturer. Probably built into the Motherboard, and probably an Intel chipset.

Check the website for whoever made your computer, Dell, Gateway, Compaq/HP ... even eMachines should have them. That would be the first shot.

Another PIA with 98 is if you install a USB device before the driver you will screw things up, so disconnect the jump drive then go into system-> device manager -> and remove the jump drive. Then reinstall the 98 driver and once that is done install the jump drive.

I skipped 98 for NT4 so I may not be the best guy for the job.

I have a web-cam installed already via a USB port, does that mean I have a USB driver installed already?

For the web cam, every device has a different usb driver.

I have a Compaq Presario 7588 that I got from the Cavemen since the dinos did not want it. I went to Compaq's website and did not find a driver. If you see a driver, let me know!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Now back to politics...He said, she said!!!!!

CJ, if you are being for real you need to get the driver from the jump drive manufacture.

Are you just fooling around or something?

Could it be that the new jump drive is fubar right out of the box? It happens. Does it work in a computer with XP or Windows 2000?
