Look out ! You could loose your car.

I would suggest you cover the tag/plate on your car/truck/van/etc....whilst in your drive way....you could come home to an empty drive way.

Why?.....because a new revenue generating system is being used, and your vehicle is the target. Officials are luvvin it !

http://thetruthaboutcars.com/content/1120659523481003420/

Seems I am going to equipe my vehicles with a flip over/retractable licence plate....just like 007.......

As an aside......If I let a car go without the customer paying me in full...I go to jail or get sued, if I try to recover my parts/labour that's not bin paid for.
But your city officials can and do sieze your vehicle for delinquent fines...and it won't stop there !

LA would make a fortune on this...25% of the cars are out of registration.

Now only if they could track people that didn't have insurance (hovering at 50% I have been told) so our premiums would go down.

Yeah, I'd hate to loose my car. I much prefer it tight.

Gosh, another way to defeat this insidious threat from the state is to PAY YOUR FINES.

I try to suppress it but sometimes it leaks out.

No doubt the 600 warning letters and threats don't seem to be effective.

OTOH, I don't support these seizures they are being abused. Many cities have found that by charging $700 to mow an overgrown lawn and heavy fines that they can force a rightful but poor homeowner on the street and make big bucks from the home seizure, to make matters worse they poorly advertise auctions and make buying criteria hoops so tight only a person in city hall can jump through.

That sounds a lot easier than "immanent domain."

As the article points out, the databases can be wrong (and when handled by error-prone humans, I'd bet it happens a lot). What if you paid the damn fine, but they took your car *anyway*? The article continues:

"Now it’s a Constitutional nightmare, mocking fundamental and cherished legal protections: the right to be presumed innocent, the right to a trial by jury, the right not to have excessive fines imposed, the right not to be searched or have your property seized without reason or warrant, and the right to due process."

Exactly. Saying "It don't matter to me, I pay mah fines" will just let them get away with more and more.

We need to fight this sort of thing. Earlier this year I got a minor speeding ticket -- nothing but a revenue-generating speedtrap. One hundred sixty-eight bucks for eleven over in a 20 that was not a school zone, and I was *already slowing down* when they zapped me. Uh-uh. I got a lawyer and went to court. Case dismissed. Lawyer cost me half what the ticket would have . . . but even if he'd cost more, it would have been worth every nickel.

The mention of Albuquerque, NM, using this combined with red-light cameras in the article worries me. I like that place and was thinking about moving there. Got to rethink it. . . .

As an aside, I have summer custody of my kids, but the mom wont turn them over and the police wont enforce the court order. Guess they are too busy finding people who owe the city $60 to worry about kids being able to see their dads.
