Newer Jags are still junk!

I thought the new Jags ie XJ8 and newer were pretty reliable cars. Here is a running total of repairs my Grand parents mint sub 50k mile XJ8 has needed this year:
$3,500 for AC/computer repair.
$6k to replace the trans that blew up all of a sudden.
$2k for other computer and broken stuff.

Expensive year, they should have bought an S class! My grandfather likes the Q45's at this rate they may defect to more reliable Japanese cars!

They should have stayed with GM transmissions....like they once used for a while.

The XJ12 used the very same transmission my 3/4 ton Truck uses...that will outlast the rest of the car.

What year is your grand parents XJ8? Has it had the update to the 3rd generation tensioners yet? If not, I wouldn't start the car unless you have that done. When they go, and they are well know for failure, you end up with a big hunk of aluminum you can use for a paperweight.

The new Jags are essentially Fords made in England. Total Junk. IMHO

It is a 98; I know all about the weak upper timing chain tensioners and also about the blocks. So does my grandfather, I don't know if he ever did anything about it though.

At this point the engine blowing up may not be a bad thing! Tow this thing right down to the Infiniti dealer and get a nice Q45.

It really is a pretty nice car though when it is working right. Fit and finish are extremly good, just not quite as good as MB. The engine itself is a Jag design Ford had nothing to do with it. The trans I think is a ZF, 5spd auto with that "filled for life" fluid.

Don't think Ford was involved in 1998 (?)... Neighbor of mine has a 2004 X... looks, feels, and drives like a Ford Taurus on 17" wheels.

Well the X type really isn't a Jag. The XJ series and S types very much still are. Even the new XJ8 has very little Ford in it.

Didn't the XJS-12 have a 3 speed automatic?
