a little computer help, please

Hey Guys,

I figured out why my digital camera won't talk to my computer anymore.

Here's the info I got off the net. Can someone tell me how to do the required items at the end of this post please?

Once I'm able to download pictures from the camera, I'll be able to post some pictures of my bike for Kuan and others.

SYMPTOMS
Some programs (that are supplied by hardware manufacturers) that support imaging devices, such as, scanners and cameras, may not work when you upgrade your computer to Windows XP and use Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) drivers.

CAUSE
This problem can occur because the operating systems that existed before Windows XP do not have any signed WIA drivers that are related to still imaging devices. When Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Microsoft Windows 2000 is upgraded to Windows XP, the technology without an interesting name (TWAIN) drivers that had been previously installed are removed because WIA drivers are available.

NOTE: The TWAIN drivers are produced by independent hardware vendors (IHVs). TWAIN is an image capture application programming interface (API) that is used by Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh operating systems. WIA drivers are signed drivers that enable the automatic detection and installation of still imaging devices.

RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, remove the WIA driver and reinstall the IHV driver as the WIA drivers can provide less features than the previously installed IHV drivers. To return to the full functionality that is provided by third-party programs that are available when you use IHV drivers you must:

1. Remove the program.
2. Remove the WIA driver by using Device Manager.
3. Install the IHV driver by using Device Manager.
4. Reinstall the program.

Really though, if the program does not have its own uninstall utility go to add/remove programs and remove the software or if it can't be found find the folder and delete it.

You might be able to screech by by replacing the driver in device manager.

HAHA

I've thought about it, believe me. As it is, most of the editing software is also being done for Windows, so at least for now I'll stick with that. You're pretty happy with the Mac, though, aren't ya?

1. All it's saying is to remove the camera software using the uninstall software procedure.

2. Then remove whatever drivers are being currently used by going to the control panel -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager and then remove the items associated with the camera.

3. Restart

4. Install the TWAIN driver

5. Then install the camera utility. (It may not work like this since the camera utility may include the TWAIN driver in the software bundle)

Hopefully it should work then

Is there a way to tell what items are associated with the camera once I get into the Device Manager?
Also, where do I find the TWAIN driver and install it?

Thanks!

To simplify things, what camera model do you have? That would help a lot.

If you go into the Add/Remove software in the control panel you can remove the TWAIN software there.

Once the software is removed and there is something still resident in the system, go to the device manager there will be something that reads e.g. "Kodak TWAIN Driver" or "Canon PowerShot TWAIN Capture" that corresponds with the brand name of the camera that you have. That's usually the sure way to remove it and anyting latent on the system.

Does your computer have a card reader hidden somewhere?

Go buy a multicard reader at the computer store.

Download Picasa. (thanks Medmech)

Thats what I was thinking a card reader is only $20 and you'll need it for other media.

I'm waiting by the window for the UPS guy to drop off my new mac's, my dog got bored waiting with me.

Hey, that's GREAT! I'll pick one up today and maybe that'll be the easiest fix.

BTW, I did go to the manufacturer's website but my camera isn't listed there. Maybe it's because the camera's about three years old, so it's too old to support.

I didn't think that was a workaround which would be been a natural choice. I figured the camera was newer and you wanted to use the software suite it came with

Make sure you get a USB 2.0 Reader. Check to see if your computer has a 2.0 capability so you won't be dissapointed when it downloads at 1MB per second.

What camera model is it?
