Start'n from the bottom again!

My skills as "skilled craftsman" are from what I see, OBSOLETE!

I need a job that pays better than $6, $7, or 8$ dollars an hour. Before 1999, my self-employment as a Marine Surveyor, 9 years, earned me a respectable income worthy of what we call a normal living.

Now, more than 5 years later, and out of the circles of surveying, was SAMS, now defunct, I'm 50, and wonder what jobs I can find employment. I'm under the gun now, I've got to produce, yet my memory is failing as most who are over 50 can attest, am I wrong?

What shall I aim for with limited education, that from my past which is, or has become, OBSOLETE!

Aim South. I don't know how old you are but the electrical industry is always looking for people with a brain.

Ha, I am at a loss as to who and how tom contact those who could use my abilities as a former marine surveyor. I looked briefly a minute ago into BOAT-US but I have also worked with Travelers, amongst the brunt from over the past many years.

Used to know some big fish in the insurance industry, but most if not all are retired or elsewhere!

Been out of it too long. I'm willing to go down into the muck from Katrina if you know someone or some body that might be interested. I have knowledge and many involvements with estimating, that with marine related, and probably more!

I guess do some surfing and find out who the top marine insurance companies are, I know Chase does a ton of marine loans contact their loss department and ask around and the same for travelers. They might even be posting on Monster.com . Call some US based boat manufactures like Tiara/S2 Endevour, Huntley and i'm sure someone there can easily point you in the right direction. Insurance companies are hiring builders from michigan to to estimating down there. The going rate is $500 a day plus expenses. I would think that you could do better than that. I wish Narwhal could log on because he was a harbor master and I bet he has some insurance adjuster contacts.

Let your fingers do the walking bub.

Write up your resume and check out all the marine surveyor services. Florida is the hot bed for pleasure boats as well as SoCal. Every time I needed a survey I had to wait two weeks for an appointment.

Try Fugro-Chance and C&C Technologies. Both outfits are crying-out for marine surveyors worldwide.

If you want to retail your skill set, learn GIS (for ex. ArcMap, Microstation, Socet) and do contract work. There is plenty of work if you're willing to move.

Uh-oh.

Behold, the ignorance of a member! I didn't know what a marine surveyor did. I thought they did bathymetry, not seagoing vessel analysis!

So let me take my suggestion and exit, stage left!

OTOH, the Microstation skill set and/or Autocad would get you into something new and challenging working with design?

I'm changing my name.

Thank you all for your friendly and truly helpful hospitality. I had not been thinking beyond the front yard, so to speak! I have been care-taker to both my mom and dad for the past five years, both have Alzheimer's! But many things, including my sanity, are at limit! This has not been one of my finest years and I have been tested beyond!

Recently, I posted a thread conveying such, and for those who read it, I can now say that there was a ruling that ended with "nullification" that meaning I am off the hook! A hook from 23 years ago I was not on, but anyway it's past. My gas station buddy's, a judge threw out, for that I'm not happy but I'm glad at least I inconvenienced them! I'm still working on the inflicted road rage upon me this past memorial day weekend were two women decided to cut me off in traffic in my former 450SL, and screamed I hit them, wrong!

If there was no such thing as BAD LUCK, I'd have no luck at all!

$hit happens, and this summer I'd have to say that I stunk! I need a break!
