Dean: Race Played a Role in Katrina Deaths

Dean: Race Played a Role in Katrina Deaths
Sep 07 7:44 PM US/Eastern

By DENISE KALETTE
Associated Press Writer

MIAMI

Race was a factor in the death toll from Hurricane Katrina, Howard Dean told members of the National Baptist Convention of America on Wednesday at the group's annual meeting.

Dean, chairman of the Democratic party, made the comments to the Baptists' Political and Social Justice Commission. The Baptist Convention, with an estimated 3.5 million members, is one of the largest black religious groups in the country.

"We must ... come to terms with the ugly truth that skin color, age and economics played a deadly role in who survived and who did not," Dean said.

Dean said Americans have a moral responsibility to not ignore the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Katrina when it struck the Gulf Coast.

The former presidential candidate said the government will be judged by how it treats the old, the young and the poor.

"People are poor in different parts of the country. They are not refugees. They are Americans," he said.

Dean said that instead of considering proposed estate tax breaks, the Senate should channel the money into disaster relief.

"Shall we give that to the wealthiest people in the country, or should we rebuild New Orleans?" Dean said.

Dean also urged the government to exempt victims of Hurricane Katrina from a stricter new bankruptcy law for one year.

Ken Mehlman, Dean's counterpart at the Republican National Committee, said he hoped Dean "will match his rhetoric with his support for reforms that replace bureaucracy and entitlement with hope and opportunity."

Stephen J. Thurston, president of the Baptist Convention, said there was a lack of response and sensitivity by the government following the Gulf Coast disaster.

Damn straight! Hell some of em spent their money to buy drugs, booze & dogfood!! I saw all these idiots that didn't even have motorized wheelchairs for god sakes - what were they thinking!!! Did you see how bad most of their teeth were? Stinky, dirty, jeeze - how can people survive like that? Some of em didn't even have cars - did they not know they could get a car at the low employee price!!!! There's just no excuse for this - give em a free ticket back to Liberia - and call slavery a bad idea!!!!!

No huricanes in Germany or Austria - a little flood now and then maybe, but it kinda makes you think.

Yes but we have our share of blizzards, hail and tornados. Could a blizzard or a tornado be the root cause of ethnic cleansing? Get real Howard and go hop on some other propaganda bandwagon. Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in North Dakota anymore.

Oh brother!

Dean was saying is that had the $$ that we gave to the rich in the form of tax cuts been used on infrastructure, the poor people in the area wouldn't be in this mess!!!

Stop trying to make the guy seems like a racist! That is assinine at best!! Look at what he did as govenor. He's a genius and it really pisses the current Bush-Lovers off.

Stop reading things that aren't there!

This is where even you can realize how silly you can be.
The guy is able to balance the budget, take care of the poor, and doesn't have to "owe" any "big business" a single thing to get his agenda passed.

In addition, per capita, his states GDP is at the toward the top of the food chain.

The only good thing is that people like you can only call him a "blowhard" and having nothing tangible to say about him. If HE had been President you can rest assured things in this country would be VERY different and VERY VERY much better. Instead now we have soaring rates, fuel prices, warS, and terror... not to mention soaring debt and STILL no health care.

Oh YES! But BushHaliburton are doing GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAT!

At least the only thing you could come up with was "blowhard" -- I always ask silly people like you to come up with ONE bad thing he did as govenor, or ONE bad idea he had for the nation???

Don't worry. The best you can do is name call.

Well, that's just plain silly.
