Cat chewed on mouse cord - Now PC won't reboot

For months they left the cord alone...this morning they had to chew on it. At first it just appeared frozen, so I got a new mouse out and plugged it in. Nothing happened. So, I thought maybe I just need to reboot, so it can "see" the new mouse. Keyboard wouldn't respond (one light was lit, as usual). So, I pushed the reset button, expecting to shortly read the usual admonishment for not properly shutting down the machine, when...nothing happened. It looks like it might have started to boot...the lights on the CD and DVD player started to flash, and then nothing...not a dang thing!

Any ideas? Did they fry the motherboard?

Thanks for any help!

-Larry

Try disconnecting the mouse and keyboard and see if it boots?
What operating system are you using?

I'm running WinXP (home)..never had problems with it or the rest of the machine, except for a memory stick than went south a couple of months ago.

Did you mean reboot without the mouse and keyboard connected?

----- Instead of waiting for a reply, I just did disconnected both. I got two beeps this time and now it appears to be booting - the file system checking is going on now....

ok... everything booted nicely Now.... dare I reconnect the keyboard and the mouse....?

OK...now it's getting a little odd.

I reconnected the keyboard (nothing lit up) ...then I reconnected my new mouse (it didn't respond either).

I tried rebooting (reset switch) ....nothing

I tried rebooting w/o keyboard but with mouse.....the mouse works!

Now...to find a keyboard somewhere and try it out....

Wish me luck!

A new keyboard seems to have fixed it (so far)

Howdy Larry,
Now you need a dog to keep the cats away from the mouse :-)

That's just too poetically perfect.
