Lousy computer issues again

I manage to keep this thing chugging along, maybe we can replace it next year. #1 hinderance is I am tied to dial-up. Waiting for DSL to be offered here some day. Cable way too much, have to get digital cable (TV) and we don't want it.
The machine keeps slowing up, I run a few programs at it to debug it and it helps. Had to do a restoration point to get my disc defragged (had this problem before), but finally got it all done (scanned C and D drives for errors too).
If someone knows of a good free program for checking for other junk on my disc I'd appreciate knowing about it.
One weird thing I'm curious about; I like going to cartalk.com, lately I can't because I get that one Microsoft error message (where they want to know if you want to report the error or not, and they say they're sorry for the inconvenience but we need to shut down IE or whatever). Why would it just do that at one site like that?
This junkpile is a Compaq from I think 1999 running that wunnerfull "ME" OS.

CCLEANER, Microsoft antispyware should be a good start.

I feel your pain, mine's almost 5 years old and I still got dial up, although I might spring for a dish next round.

Problem is I'm a truck driver and not around much. I have been the last week or so, but it'll soon be time to be gone and the wife rarely uses the computer.

Tried the Crap Cleaner and no improvement. The habit it has to have a MS malfunction if I go to cartalk.com is very confusing.
Locked up a short time ago, error was OE 0028 C002F972, anyone smart enough to know what that means? 'Bout ready to reformat the disc (again)

If your serious about keeping it for at least another year, then I would say to go ahead and upgrade to Windows 2000. Everything will still work the same, but it is a much much better OS than Me.

You should install Mozilla Firefox and use that as your browser, which will eliminate any "Microsoft error message" Also, Firefox is safer and easier to use. You can download it for free at www.getfirefox.com. It may take a while though, because you have dial-up. I could send you the setup file by email if you wish.

As for other programs to "scan your disk" I would try ad-adware SE if you have not already. This will get rid of any spy/ad ware that could be slowing things down.

Running windows 2000 will help significantly (as long as you have enough memory) how much memory do you have ? If you dont know, right click "My Computer" select "Properties" and it should tell you. I would not reccamend using windows 2000 without at least 128 megabytes of memory.

That error occurs when Windows ME is for some reason resetting the registry. Im not sure why going to a certain website would do this though.
