I've Got a 1924 Yugoslavian 8mm Mauser all original just missing the original cleaning rod and bayonet....fire 10+ rounds without a shoulder pad adn it will bruise your shoulder...when firing 190 grain Norma ammunition anyway...Thats what I used Deer hunting.

My personal 4 rules of gun ownership. Never point your weapon, loaded or unloaded, at an object you don't want dead. Even (or especially) accidentally. Never point a weapon at a person you don't fully intend to kill, whatever the reprecussions. Even accidentally. Never kill any animal that isn't a threat, unless you intend to eat it. Don't pull the trigger until you are sure you can live with the results. A corallary: I have known a few men (and one woman) who regarded a weapon pointed at them as an immediate threat and would react to the occassion. Don't piss these folks off by being a fool with a weapon. It is you ass. Bot |

Pick up a Russian .22lr bolt-action trainer at your local gunmonger. I have one, and picked mine up in AR for about $120. With irons and my minor flinch, I can keep all the bullets on a half dollar at 25yds, and I can barely see the target. I am thinking of scoping it, as I know I can get about 3 times the accuracy if I can see what the hell i am doing. I can send a tin can down the road forever with irons, which is all you really need it to do to get you started on the road to enjoying firearms and gaining proficiency with them.
If you have anymore questions about firearms, go to www.thehighroad.org . I post there often, and these guys are some of the most knowledgeable and respectable people you will ever meet. You won't regret perusing that site. Tell'em MoparMike sent you.

.223
Plenty of excellent advice here, beginning with safety.
.22 match rifles are great for working on precision and accuracy, style -- all inexpensively. A step-up to bolt-action .223, I am confident, would meet your needs for years to come and not disappoint you. Consider a bolt-action, stainless steel, with a bull barrel. The .223 round is extremely easy to find, generally inexpensive, easy to reload, and there are plenty of "fun" rounds available. If you don't want a bolt-action, then consider a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle (infamously wielded by the ridiculous A-Team), which can be durable & provide surprisingly accurate results, and has many accessories available. I have from .22 up to a 300 Win Mag and enjoy them all. While I've not personally confirmed this (though it does seem plausible), the issues with the larger calibers, beyond cost in shooting, includes them stopping your heart for an instant every time you fire them. Myth? I don't know. Obviously this is not yet an issue for a great many shooters, but is still something to be considered. Whatever you get, always clean it well and take the time to learn how to shoot it correctly from the get go. Last edited by gottheMBZbug; 11-30-2005 at 10:40 AM. |

Something else: get a gun small enough not to need ear protection.
Another rule Don't pull the trigger to see if the gun is loaded |
