Spammer problem?

Anyone have any ideas on how we can fix this spammer problem? I am thinking about posting their email and IP address's. Anyway we can use those to screw with them? Since the spam all seems to be similer I bet it is coming from one source.

I don't know -- they're on every forum I've seen from time to time. This does seem to be one of their favorites, though.

You are also assuming they aren't spoofing their IP and address....or that the machine originating it isn't a robot.....

Over on 190revolution.net we've been getting hit by "bots" that set up accounts, and then post the same 5 posts in random threads. The text of the posts are designed like horoscopes, it could apply to anything, but their signatures are always to some online casino site. I use a search string to find the posts since they've been identical so far.

Do a challenge/response e-mail for new registrants before allowing them to post.

They always seem to show up first thing in the morning. Simple solution is just to have the east coast mod (i.e. you..) check first thing, delete the one that's in OD (there's always one there), and then look for the 2 or 3 similar posts from the same source in other forums and delete those. Then you're done for the day.

Send new registrants their password via e-mail. Then you have a valid e-mail address. You might delay it by a day

Is there a way to keep them in a moderated mode where a post has to be approved my a mod. I was on a Merkur list and it was spam free because of that. You had to have several posts before the mod turned you loose

I got an idea.

Attach a credit card verification thing. On another forum I belong to, they require you to put in a(n) credit card number of some sort. Of course it is confidential, but then they transfer a minute amount of money into the account (.10 cents or so) and they verify by having you inser the amount. Then, they remove the amount they debited and voila, you now have access to the forums.

Also, it may be beneficial to have a sytem in place (dont know id they have it), where it filters new posters content (people with under like 5 posts). That way, the mods can approve to see if the content is valid or not.

I don't like that idea...the risk for users if a hacker got in and got account numbers is too great...not to mention liability issues for the Site owners....

Good ideas I am going to run a few past Bill. I like the emailing password thing.

I'd love to check in every morning but I do have a life outside of OD! I need to go to work/school.
