Turtles and Tires

Was reading an article about US highway 27 in northern Florida(near Lake Jackson). In one year just on a 2 mile stretch of the US 27 over 400 turtles got hit. I doubt anyone on here ever hit a turtle, but this got me wandering, if you hit a turtle what are the chances the shell will damage the tire?

snibble, I know its silly but a technician told me if the broken shell was sharp enough and depending on the angle it could happen, but I kind of doubted him.

..........well, if you run into one of those 2 foot sea turtles while going 75 mph....................but, then your problems will be greater than a cut tire.........

for the more prosiac land turtle, i would think the likelyhood of cutting a tire is small but possible.

of course some of the snapping turtles get pretty big too. 2' diameter is quite possible. so on one that big, all bets are off.

and if you encounter on in person, it is not a good idea to tease them with your fingers. their heads can strike out like lightning!

This reminds me of when I use to live in south Florida. A co-worker of mine hit an alligator one night when he was doing over 90 MPH in his Audi. The Audi suffered substantial front end damage. He walked back to find the gator and it left the scene of the crime.

It could have been worse. The gator could have stuck around for lunch (your co-worker).

That ad wants you to try a tire popping experiment. Kinda like myth busters but I dont think that pretty little red head would be up for squishing live animals in the name of science.

How about an alligator

How about an alligator going 90 MPH? Besides, who would believe an alligator would drive an Audi anyway. Everybody knows alligators all drive Fords and Chevys.

I have never, to my knowledge, hit a turtle, but I've seen plenty of them on the roads around here. When circumstances permit, we get the unsquashed ones off the road.

This gopher tortoise was hunkered down between the two southbound lanes of the very same highway 27, not far from Lake Jackson. That section of 27 is, as you noted, a less than optimal place to be a turtle.
