Hot water would make a mess and freeze again (assuming the work is done when it's sub 32F).

That's what I assumed would happen if not done properly but figured that it was a sound concept. I have a fairly powerful powerwasher that we've hooked up to hot water before.

It was your problem of being unable to swing a sledge at the top of a ladder that gave me the idea.

Sounds like you have it under control and 6" is workable.

The one's around here (mine as well) are 3 ft thick, especially on the gutter itself. I tried chipping them, but I can't get a good swing standing on a ladder- plus it's dangerous. I have some water stains, not terrible, but would be a problem with the pending melt. The guy coming out is a reference from a local hardware store and his prices were good. He's a gutter installer in the summer, so should know the drill. Lots of scammers out there and some guys are charging $375/hr, this guy is $200/hr and shouldn't take more than 3 hours.

Under 6" there's no problem. At 1' I had water coming in through my dormer roof (not flat but shallow pitch). We don't usually get any, or have to remove snow from roofs, so this is all new to us.

Per the roof experts, it only takes a few inches of ice to cause a headache. Not sure I believe that, but it's a good rule of thumb.

Hoping to actually haul Ed down to Joanie's tonight..... will be his first non-medical field trip since quadruple bypass surgery. Fingers crossed!

Key word there, inches. A light coating of ice probably isn't a big deal. Once it start to layer and get deep however.....

How's the icing doing for the folks? My driveway is almost clear and if it weren't for some "salt piles" still mounded on the edges of the roadways around my neighborhood, I almost would have had the 107 out yesterday for a spin around the block...oooooooooooh......it was sooooooooo tempting...

Maybe later today....Hmmmmmm?

I'll take pictures if I break her out!!!

Looks like a very mild weekend ahead here in the DC area. If it doesn't rain, I may drag all my tools out into the driveway and get back to work on some more house projects.

Have a great weekend everybody.

Suppose to be nice in Indiana. I worked on the Jeep Cherokee last night. I finally drilled out the rear shock bolts and tapped new ones. I went to put on some shocks that were given to me. I had to get some bushings made at work, as the ones in the shocks were two small. I still have to figure out the miss in the engine. I replaced some injectors and that didn't do anything.
I also have to get my Ford Contour running. The fuel pump went out, last week. The replacement came yesterday. I don't know if I'll have time. The later models, you have to cut the opening in the body or pull the fuel tank.
There are also a few dances I want to go to. The MB is the only thing running. It should make the trip up to Indy, but it could use some work too. At least the weather is suppose to stay warm(ish).

I can see my back steps for the first time since December! While dad was out plowing out the neighborhood, mom kicked the kids out the back door to play. And rather than help dad out by shoveling the back steps and the walk to the driveway it all got played upon, with the usual in-and-out for potty breaks/hot chocolate/tell on siblings, and packed down like concrete. The 22" and 14" set the base, the weekly 4-6" filled in the gaps and the footprints. It would have made for a nice wheelchair access ramp, a gradual drop from 3' to ground level with a lazy 90* turn in the middle. Until a few recent 50* days followed by teen* nights made it into more of a bobsled course. Sans the bobsled and safety gear.

At least with the steps visible again, you could get yourself squared and set before the descent. At least in my mind. Everyone else made me put out some icemelt after my 4yo did a half-gainer with a full twist yesterday morning. I'm plannning on taking our Piggyback forklift home tomorrow afternoon to see if I can loosen up and break up the hardpack mounds that are left so I can push them back a few more feet to regain the parking area in my backyard.

Then it's February vacation next week. At least basketball tourneys keep the oldest two busy for the most of it.

Little bit of work, little bit of last minute rescheduling of a trip to WA that was supposed to be Monday :P, then I awakened Gustav from his winter slumber.

Puttered about with the front passenger window - haven't been able to raise/lower it right for years. Was able to bend things around a bit - at least now the window goes down smooth, up is bumpy and I'm not sure it won't revert to trouble later - but we can get rid of the screwdriver that was wedged in to hold the window up :D

Darling Wife got back from taking Ed to his heart doc, and we set about making Gustav shiny. Something his has needed for a VERY long time, it was 70* outside, and was a good cheap date.

Wound up running out of daylight before we ran out of Gustav, so the last of the wax was removed by Darling Wife whilst she was wearing my headlamp.

Damn Jim! That looks so nice, even if the shot is dark.

I got home, it was only 28°F and the salt trucks were out flavoring the roads in the area...frinkin' Canadian Cold Fronts...and their Rears are a pain too!!!

Oh well...maybe in a week or three...at least I'm hoping for an earlier spring... ;)

The wind is really blowing up a storm here today. I've given up chasing my trash cans around the yard. I'll wait until the wind dies down.

Went to my first Apple One to One workshop on using Pages, their word processor. I hope last night's session was not typical. The girl who was supposed to be training me seemed to know less than I did. Everytime I asked a question, she would say, "Hmm, let's see," and then she would go to the help menu to look it up. It was absolutely painful for me. It couldn't have been much fun for her.
Finally, I said, "Forget what I want to learn. What do YOU use this for? Just show me how to do the things you know, and maybe then I can figure the rest out for myself." She still seemed to be at a loss, so I said, "Never mind. I'll just have to try and figure it out on my own."
I'm a real Apple fan, but I must say this was very disappointing. Anybody else here subscribed to the Apple One to One program?
