Eye glasses are expensive!

I keep things for a very long time so I havn't bought a pair of glasses in like 4 years. I walked in today because mine are getting a bit tired, and walked out $500 lighter. Ouch, but they are nice looking.

Hatt- I hope those come with free maid service for a year! Holy sh--. I keep mine for a long time too, I just take the frames and have them cut new lenses. I love glasses, I still have a pair of vintage porche carrera sunglasses with mirror coating on them. Makes me look like superfly.

Include frames, new lenses, and clip on sunglass lenses for them. Figured those would be nice to have for driving.

They are a BS sunglass though, I'd never wear them on the water.

Pick the frames, and get the script... Hong Kong. $20 any frames you could want.

Bring them to the Dr. to make sure they are right... (they always are)... and you're good to go.

Hat, I have a pair of oakley whisker perscription sunglasses.... I ordered the frames from oakley, and had my RX lenses installed.

Then I have my glasses... I have no vision insurance, and I had to shell out 300 for the ones I got. They are nice, and fit the countour of my face.

I've had mine for years. At the time, I opted for polycarbonate lenses with a titanium frame.

The lenses seem unbreakable, they are reluctant to scratch, and the frames have maintained their shape perfectly. I am very tough on glasses since I rarely use a case for storage. I am usually doing some kind of hands-on work.

About $300, all said and done, and they're very stylish. As far as glasses go, anyway. No shades included.

Gotcha both beat. Had a pair of Cartier gold frames that I wore for quite a few years until the went out of style. Around $1,400 for the frames only, as I recall.

A little extravagance is good.

I need sunglasses soon as well. My Columbia's are getting a bit tired and dated. I want a set of Costa Del Mar, or Maui Jim's.

There goes another $300+.

My regular glasses are the Flexon... I have sat on them more than once... And they are still in one piece.

I hope you paid for that in cash so the person behind you didn't have to wait.

I get mine at Costco. Never paid more than $20. Of course I don't have fancy frames.

Wait til you guys get old

Buying expensive frames is one thing. Wait til you have to get progressive lenses with half a dozen special coatings, etc. The frames will be the least of your worries.

Bonehead (may he rest in peace) said he got his in Italy and if he was telling the truth, they were way cheaper than they are here. Good excuse for a trip to Europe if you can swing that.

That other thread is here:

Eyeglasses, quality vs price? How to buy in today's global marketplace?

Things like glasses that you use so much and that perform such a critical function are worth the extra money. If you think about spreading the cost over the lifespan of the glasses it is not so much really.

Also, in some of the pivotal moments in your life someone will look you in the eye. What do you want them to see? You probably don't want them to wonder if you are trying to dress like Elton John.

I read recently that Luxottica is an Italian company and the largest supplier of eyeglass lens in the world. I thought about what the Bonehead said when I read that.

Word of advice: should you leave the country where labor is cheap, have your eyes checked. I'm currently still in the Philippines and I'm on my third pair of glasses (1 pair a year). Check up is free, unlike those $90 ones you see around in the malls.

My new glasses cost me just $80. Also, why buy expensive frames when you can go frameless?
