Ford V10 verses Chevy's 8.1 V8

I debating which truck would be the better choice. The Ford has two more cylenders, but is still a smaller engene then the Chevy. I would suspect that the V10 might run smoother, but the v8 has two less moving parts. The question would be, which motor will give me the best towing capibilities and be the longest lasting.

What are the output specs on each (hp/torque@rpm)? What's the fuel economy of each? And why in the world are you looking at gas engines on trucks that big?

I just bought a 99 Ford 7.3 Powerstroke deisel and IMO if your going to tow something heavy it's the way to go! The best part for me is that I get as good or better fuel milage than my little 1/2 ton Dodge that I had! I have some serious hills in this area and that baby yanks that 30ft TT like it was a rowboat!! and with the chip I put in it that puppy will dust quite a few cars !

If you've already mad the decision to go for gas, then just pic which truck you like better. The Chevy is older, but proven tech. The same big block thats been built for ever. The Ford is newer tech, the early ones had issues with blowing spark plugs out of the heads. I think the Ford has a better overall build quality but that of course is opinion. The Chevy has a better interior if you are looking at the top of the line trucks in both cases. We have an 01 F350 7.3 Lariat and love it.

Heh

I have no idea about trucks, but saying "I have a V10" is a lot cooler than "I have a V8"

Get the V10

While gassing up the new company truck, a passerby from the new car lot next door, asked which motor was in the truck. When he saw the label, he remarked that he was glad to see it wasn't the 8 liter... either they started to burn oil too soon, or some other ailment would start way too soon in its life.
Maybe you can find something out on the web by searching for 8.1 problems.

Choice C the Cummins!

Both engines are gas thirsty fuel hogs, that lack the towing power a proper diesel will offer you. Not to mention resale is in the pits.

Hmm

I agree a diesel would probably be a better choice. Cummins are great, but I've heard (and experienced) bad stuff with Dodge as my dad's 1500 has been have all sorts of dumb issues. The Ford on the other hand is a marvelous truck, but the engine doesn't hold a candle to Cummins, IMO.

The chebbys have a nasty problem with piston slap. The engine is put together with poor parts that dont fit right and make knocking sound like a diesel when they are cold.

GM says this is "normal".

The Dodge 2500's drive line is a bit better, but yeah the rest of the truck is a bit of a disapointment.

My ideal truck would be a GMC 2500 HD, with a Cummins and the Allison trans. Of course the truck would be loaded up with all those great GM options; leather, climate control, ect ect.
