Leads on a service manual for a Consew Model 18?

The wife uses a Consew Model 18 to sew heavy fabrics / vinyl. Occasionally, it goes out of time when she runs through a thick edge.

I'd like to have the knowledge to fix this myself. It is just a sewing machine fer cripe's sake, but for the life of me, I can not figure out how a sewing machine works. I can keep 6 benzes running, a few boats, do all the work around the house, manage a multimillion dollar business, but this damn sewing machine is killing me.

Any idea on where I can get either a copy of specific service manual for a Consew Model 18, or a book describing the servicing and timing of an industrial walking foot sewing machine?

I've got a consew 230. Are you sure it's the timing or is it the presser bar and the tension, since the problem occurs when going over thick stock?

The manual I have has very sparse instructions on timing. It gives 3 paragraphs on adjusting the timing between the needle and the rotating hook;

1. Basically, for my 230, when the needle is raised 2mm frorm the lowest point, th epoint of the hook should meet with the center of the needle.

2. In the case the height of the needle should be adjusted by loosing screw for needle bar bracket so that distance between upper end of the needle's eye and inside of the point of the hook will be 1.6mm.

3. Hook should be set so that the clearance between needles and the point of hook should be about 0.07-0.12mm.

Careful in messing around with it. Sewing machines aren't as forgiving as cars.

I'll try and get Mrs. Peragro to scan in that page and email it to you tomorrow...

Good luck.

It is at the shop right now. 2nd time for the same probelm, about a year apart. I am hoping to learn how to fix this thing myself. I would appreciate any materials you can scan for me. I ahve no manual on this machine.

I asked the wife to scan it in. Things were kinda busy today and she hasn't had a chance. It's a pretty pathetic manual, as far as manuals go. I'll send it when I get it.

Ask the shop guy what it was that he adjusted when you go pick it up.
