The Establishment Strikes Back

You may not have seen it on the news, but when Chavez began his UN speech, he held up Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival and recommended it for reading.
The Wall Street Journal parries the blow:

WRONG !

Before starting his speech, Chavez held up a liquor store.

TUI, talking under the influence.

I'd expect some posters on this board might think that calling someone an adolescent was a decent criticism but a philosopher writing for the WSJ should have produced a little more substantive a piece.

If that is the most substantive criticism that you read in that op/ed piece you might want to take another look.

I especially appreciated this observation, "And many of his public appearances are in America: the only country in the whole world that rewards those who denounce it with the honors and opportunities that make denouncing it into a rewarding way of life."

The irony of it is apparently as lost on Cholmsky as it is lost on several correspondents to this forum.

Chomsky has written many times in praise of US free speech.

Undoubtedly.

Does this mean that you do not find it ironical that he (Cholmsky) doesn't spend as much time criticizing all of the many places in the world that that torture and kill people for free expression and any number of other freedoms that we believe are natural rights of man, as he does thrashing his own country, that rewards him for that same abuse so handsomely?

Curious thought in me brain.

I wonder if all this sado/masochism - 'whips n chains' stuff has not finally crept into a larger part of certain societal spheres. A psychosocial phenomena.

Indulging in self hatred and abuse... wierd......

I've certainly heard him criticize other places in the world and also offer an explanation as to why he focuses on exposing US imperial foreign policy. It's because he thinks people have an obligation to speak up about the system they are responsible for as citizens of a democracy. Seems reasonable to me.

I too, have read his criticisms of foreign regimes. I have always found them to be well-reasoned, though not necessarily justified. And the same of his criticisms of the USA.

I agree folks have a civic obligation and moral duty to speak-up when they believe their gov is operating counter to the best interests of the governed.

How many criticisms of say, ... Indonesian transgressions of human freedom = 1 transgression of human freedom in the USA? Liberia? Rwanda? ANY-stan? Russia? Cuba?
