In the 1/4 the truck may almost do it. But these cars are not ment for the 1/4. In an open road race not a chance the S600 would walk away. I can't imagin that truck passing the 150 mark, a speed the MB just glides by.

In the real world(70 to 100 on the freeway)..that truck will beat a Benz S600 so bad ...the guys whole family would be bruised..

I have rolled with a SL65 600+hp/700+tq from 70 to 100 on the freeway the little Benz pulled me by 2 cars.... Many a Bmw,Porche 911,MB,Corvette.. many have been shocked by my mild Cummins turbo intercooled truck..

the trim is cheap but none of mine has fallen off yet.

03 dodge 2500 cummins with six manual
64,000 miles
original front tires: over 50% tread (i mounted the spare and bought a new tire for the rear at about 40k)
original brake pads
routine maintenance only
two warranty jobs: both seeping plugs on the head (like little freeze plugs)
one slow leak on the rf tire repaired by removing tire and reinstalling with some gook on the edge. also had to have some ac oil removed.
14mph around town
20+ on highway running empty at 75-80
50% of the mileage is towing either
9000 # 35' airstream
utility trailer with and without car
other trailers

so i dont think any new mercedes can compare with that really. anybody out there still running the factory front tires and brake pads at 64k miles? how about no (real) warrenty work?

its so good i am tempted to just let my car sit and drive it exclusively. it is just a beast to park though. 140" wheelbase quad cab.

Sounds like a great truck but I would absolutely hate driving something that size unless I needed it for work. I pretty much hate driving any truck or SUV. Hell I couldn't stand our Isuzu Trooper and that's a tiny thing compared to a quad cab. High center of gravity and surprisingly useless brakes scared me sometimes.

And I don't know how, but the brake pads were still original at 120K miles before we got rid of it. I probably would have changed them just for the hell of it.

Unfortunately the thing started getting horrible gas mileage and started leaking ATF everywhere. Parents traded it in for a Honda Element. Ugly ass vehicle and the brake pedal travels an astonishing amount but I think Honda makes some of the best shifting manual transmissions (from what I've driven, S2000, Civic Si, and now Element) so it drives well.

yeah, its a nice TRUCK. not a benz. i wish i could just buy one that was 3/4 scale everything (except the motor). actually i would take the motor smaller too if necessary. the truck just has a feel of largeness that seems wasteful.

the worst feature is visibility when parking. after three years of ownership i still end up with the bumper 5' from the car behind or ahead when parallel parking because i just cannot see at all.

i have made one modification to it which helped hugely. rancho's best gas filled nine way adjustable shocks. dodge has a tendency to undershock things especially trucks. before this change the front wheels would vibrate and dance sideways on the highway over certain types of small bumps. very disconcerting when towing a 9000# trailer on the highway on a mountainous curve. it always stopped bouncing before disaster but it always took a good while for my heart rate to come down. now it is as good as a rwd nose heavy truck can be.

I'm talking about a real world pull on a nice open road. I'd never back off at 100 unless I am running out of room fast.

There is no way an SL65 would lose to a Ram in the 100-170 range. Mercedes are not 1/4 mile cars, its amazing they can post those times since thats the last thing they are built for.

Notice the 600 doesn't let up as the speed increases.

Whats top speed for a Ram with a Cummins anyway? Low rpm of the Cummins with short gears, 110 maybe?

Nobody is disgreeing that the SL65 would outpull a full size truck from 100-170mph.....although with enough engineering I am sure that is entirely possible.

From the dragstrip videos those 1/4 mile times are well into the 120 mph range with probably a 0.40 Cd.

The SL65 would handle 10x better on the track too but it's still dissapointing to know that a $15,000 vehicle can keep up with a $190,000 vehicle.

$40k truck new, I'm sure it cost half the purchase price at least to get those times...

Exactly, something can always be built on a budget with the right tools and know how.

But if you can blaze down the track carrying 5 people sitting in air conditioned seats with the PS3's and streaming internet fed CNN that's fun too.

Hattie, those trucks are 10 years old. They're worth $6-8K now stock. I'll bet all the interior parts have fallen off and the ergonomics are rubbish but it makes for one economical sleeper car.

An 03 S600 doesn't pull a 10.4 second 1/4 mile. According to wikipedia an Enzo will pull a 10.8! Beyond the 125mph the drag will limit the car but then again most races are from the stoplight not at 125mph plus......or are they.

Yes the Cd is much worse.....I think the point is that the Cummins motor is the gem not the platform in which it it resides. The bonus is outrunning or keeping up with cars that cost 10x more can be beat by a truck that burns fuel at $0.55 per gallon.

Yep....that trucks torque is in the 1400 to 1500ft lbs range....and still capable of getting 20 mpg on the road..
