I do pushups before every workout at the gym.

10 sets of 12 pushups, on the knuckles, 30 seconds rest between each set. Keep your legs straight and lighty touch your chest to the floor. I also use a mat and wear my workout gloves when doing these to protect my knuckles.

Do that before all your workouts or at home by themselves and you'll be fine!

But that's pointless! When training I was always taught never wear gloves, they counteract the purpose of doing it in the first place. For example, punch bag work. I used to shred my knuckles on a canvas bag, now I can hit practically any abrasive surface without any damage being done. They're like leather, and that's good!
I've been to 3 Karate world championships, and one UK one. 2 of the world ones were full contact, and at the last one you could point out the guys who wore gloves. They were the ones putting more blood from their hands onto the guys gi than they were causing people to bleed.
I'm not into macho bull****, but if you're going to do it... do it right!

No, gloves are not pointless at all. It depends on what they're needed for.

I don't box or do karate. I do pushups, lift weights, and do cardio excersises. I wear them to protect my skin precisely so they don't feel and look like hardened leather!

And I know I can better control the weights I'm lifting when wearing gloves because my hands won't slip as easily.

I'm getting to the point where I could use gloves because the pressure of weights and bars definitely hurt the palms and fingers from the exertion. I guess that's progress!

Speaking of exercises, has anyone else bought a bunch of these? http://www.heavygrips.com/

They are great if you want to build your hand/forearm strength. I believe they are rated in inch-pounds (torque?). I got the 100,150,200,250,300. The average dude can compress the 150 at least 3 or 4 times.

I couldn't even compress the 200 for more than a half inch when I started but after a week or so of doing the 150 I'm able to easily do the 200. The 250 is the same story though, extremely difficult but I'll get there.

They do tear up your fingers though and you have to be careful not to overdo it. I'm giving it a rest for like 5 days since my hand starts to hurt now if I play around with them.

i have always used gloves, generally, just for warmth.

when handling things like cement blocks or demolition material, i always liked feeling the material. i always felt that if i had gloves on it would increase the chance of injury because of boldness of grabbing.

same goes for lifting weights.

kindof like the guys who raced in the fifties without guardrails and with trees growing along the sides of the courses never never never touched each other's cars on purpose.
