If cutting 2-inch PVC pipe flush with the floor, is there some sort of internal (male) insert (2-inch OD) that can be cemented in place to allow a new 2-inch PVC pipe to be coupled to it? Sort of like a 2-inch OD union which is male on both ends? Anyone ever see anything like this?

I understand what you're looking for but I've never seen such a coupling. All of them have the pipe inserted into the coupling..........not vice-versa.

Why can't you cut the pipe 1" above the floor?

yeah, you don't want to cut it flush.

i suspect you have no choice or have already done it, though.

I am adding a shower which needs to drain down to floor level. This is on a first floor concrete floor, so the shower pan is elevated about 7 inches, and the top of the P-trap is about that height. Problem is, after I ripped the wall out to see the PVC pipe I need to tie into, I realized the builder put 2 slight-angled elbows on it right at the floor to compensate for an off-center position. The couplers combined are about 8 inches tall, so by the time I add a T-fitting the shower drainage is going to be running uphill.

So either I cut flush with the floor and insert the type of coupler I mentioned at the outset, or I have to now raise my shower about 12 to 14 inches high (not going to work).

Has anyone ever peeled an elbow off of a 2-inch pipe without damaging it?

The part about no choice is becoming apparent, but no I haven't done it already (I don't want to unless I can be sure my imaginary coupler exists). So you're saying you've never seen such a contraption?

I haven't cut it yet, but I see where you're going with this. I don't think routing around the pipe is an option since the copper lines flank it and they are only about 1 or 2 inches away at best, besides the fact that the bottom plate (which surrounds the 2-inch PVC) sits lower than a tile floor immediately adjacent.

I'm 90% sure that one is available. They make a similar piece for toilet drains.

I seriously doubt such a fitting exists. It would leave you with a lip inside the pipe which would not be conducive to draining.
It might exist as a reducer fitting.
How accessible is the pipe below?
I have a vague recollection of once removing a fitting from PVC using a dremel tool to cut the fitting and then peel it back.

A sigh of relief - Is this something that would be readily available at Homely Depot, or do I have to go to a pro contractor supply? Have you actually seen one in person?

you really don't want a lip inside your pipes. it will catch stuff and tend to plug up there. i still don't understand the problem. what are we looking at in the picture?

I was thinking about the lip thing myself, and I agree - not a good idea since a turd or a hairball could get caught on it. But if that was the only option, I would still take my chances and go with it.

Kerry, the pipe is not accessible since it's buried in concrete with the surrounding floor tiled.

What you're seeing in the pic is the 2 inch pipe with the 2 45-degree elbows sitting right on top of the bottom plate.

It's possible that you might be able to get a rubber fitting that slides over the outside of the existing fittings. You may even be able to stretch out a standard rubber T to fit over the fitting. You're going to need some kind of coupling anyway aren't you to tie into the pipe above?

What are we looking at there? A standard 45 fitting butted to the pipe at the floor and then a street L 45 going into it? I think I would cut a section out of the pipe above the fittings, cut through the middle of the street L and then try to separate the remains of the street L from the bottom 45 by cutting it into little sections with a dremel and prying out each piece. This still won't put you at floor level though and you're still going to have the problem of T'ing in at a point where you also need a 45.
Is the pipe above just venting or is it carrying waste down?
