IIRC, there was an article that said kollege students took cheap vodka and filtered it thru Britta's water filter after several passes, viola, smooth vodka.

Ever try on e of these...

Flaming Dr. Pepper

Ingredients:
3/4 shot amaretto almond liqueur
1/4 oz 151 proof rum
1/2 glass beer

Method
1. Fill a shot glass about 3/4 full with amaretto and top it off with enough 151 proof rum to be able to burn.

2. Place the shot glass in another glass and fill the outer glass with beer (right up to the level of the shot glass).

3. Ignite the amaretto/151 and let it burn for a while. Blow it out (or leave it burning if you're brave - not recommended) and slam it. Tastes just like Dr. Pepper.

While you can spend a fortune on Vodka if you wish, I tend to stay with the mid-priced brands such as Smirnoff and Skyy. Perfectly fine for mixed drinks without any "repurcussions".

If you're going to make a Martini, then some of the premium brands are worthwhile. I prefer Finlandia, myself.

Smirnoff makes me puke after drinking it in cocktails.

Some of the better vodka's are:

Bols
Finlandia
Wyborowa
Belvedere (very expensive)

The first three are the "normal" type vodka's... while the last one is a "luxury" drink

There was a Myth Busters episode about it. They had a vodka expert do a blind taste test and while he could still differentiate between them they were drastically better after filtering.

Getting ready for the night ahead Hattie?

I like Absolute, though I'm by no means a vodka connoisseur. I've heard a lot of good things about Grey Goose. There also seems to have been a resurgence of a lot of new premium vodka brands lately...

Believe it or not, Finlandia is cheaper in Beijing than in Helsinki.

If you can find it, try Heavy Water. Very nice.

No one has mentioned Stolichnaya.

Always one of my favorites.

Grey Goose and all that other designer vodka are all crap IMHO.

You can always try SKOL if you are on a suicide mission.

Ouch!

I just read this:

Anheuser-Busch continues dabbling with new products and is about to make its second move into the spirits category with a 1,300-year-old Korean drink. The leading brewer has partnered with Ku Soju Inc., Laguna Hills, Calif., to test market and distribute Ku Soju, a vodka-like beverage distilled from sweet potatoes. “There’s huge potential,” said Norman Suh, president of the Ku Soju. “This is a mainstream brand for everybody. It’s much smoother, and if you compared Ku against any super premium vodka on the market—Grey Goose, Belvedere, Chopin—we’ll come out on top in any taste comparison.”

Ben300SD - watcha think about Freda Kahlo Tequila? My taste buds rate it #1. I also had the opportunity to have some special Casta Passion. This wasn't the normal shelf stuff, which is pretty good in its own right, but this was some kind of reserve. It is probably my #1, but since I can't be buying $400 bottles of Tequila, I'll settle for Kahlo.

There is a lot more re-branding going on in the world of alchoholic beverages than anyone is lead to believe. Big money goes into the marketing, into the image. This is an area that demands a very critical approach.

Vodka is pure ethanol and water. Make sure it is made from " grain neutral spirits" or it may have byproducts of petroleum in it.

I really like SKYY vodka. It has the fewest impurities, producing the best taste. Some so-called experts like their vodka to have a flavor, not me.
Vodka is supposed to be neutral in flavor. The word "vodka" is the diminutive of "water" in various Slavic languages (voda, woda, вода).

Grey Goose is pure image for the "trendy" crowd. Please.......................

Skyy is the best made!

If and when I buy Vodka, it is usually Skyy or Ketel 1.
